Re: WD40 or What????

Hey Nyminute

Try this:

Fill a jamjar with diesel. Drop in a lighted match. Result? The match will go out.

Not joking. It takes more flame to light diesel than some of the (gasoline-based)polishes on the market. Mind you, the cement mixer caught fire once, but that was because it was gas-powered! I guess I must be safety-conscious without knowing it!

Re: WD40 or What????

WD40 really isn't a lubricant. It does displace water well and cleans dirty surfaces, but if you want a lubricant, use something else. 3in1 is a great light machine oil, I am sure there are others.

PS: WD40 does nothing for arthritis when rubbed on joints. Who ever started that myth should be shot in the head.

Re: WD40 or What????

I attended a school once where the instructor offered $20 to any one that could find the word "lubricant" on a can of WD40. Fifeteen years ago he was correct, however don't try that offer now. "Lubricant" is now on the can. Why the change, I don't know. It doesn't last long as a lubricant. I use "Corrosion X" as a light lubricant. Very hard to find, but worth it for anything on a boat. It does not displace water in fuel but it protects from saltwater.

I had a seized padlock over the summer, someone handed me a can of wd40 ..no dice, I then got some Canadian tire brand silicon spray lubricant, one blast and lock was free and has remained in good working order since.

I use PB Blaster for rusted bolts and WD 40 for starting fluid and cleaning tools.

Re: WD40 or What????

I use CRC 2-26 to spray the powerheads and exterior of my motors. It's basically a light mineral oil and won't hurt the wiring or plastic. It drys but leaves a clear film. Many marine mechanics use 6-56 but CRC's tech line told me long term use will dry plastic coating on wiring and make it brittle. They don't recommend 6-56 over plastics or wiring.

For pure long term corrosion proofing I use CRC Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor. Practical Sailor did testing and it beat all others tested by a long shot. Boeshield and Corroxion X were two of the big names they tested with. I was using Corrosion X (like Boeshield) on the exterior of an alum airplane and it lasted maybe 6 months outside in the weather (1 mi from a saltwater river and 5 mi from the ocean). Fellow pilots using Boeshield get the same results. CRC lasted over a year...superior to both.

Re: WD40 or What????

I've been using a can of Prolong spray penetrating lubricant that I picked up in an autoparts store. It's pretty good stuff. They also make a line of marine products including grease and fogging oil. Haven't used them though as I tend to buy generic marine grease and fogging oil (meaning, whatever happens to be a the store on the day I decide I need some).

Re: WD40 or What????

Since I needed a spray lube for my van door hinges today, I went to the O'Reilly Auto Parts store to see what I could find.
I found that Sea Foam Deep Creep is a lubricant and according to the people at the store considered to be one of the best.
WD-40 and CRC White Lithium Grease hadn't taken care of the squeak I had even after several tries with each. One application of the Deep Creep and the squeak is history. I'm beginning to think these Sea Foam people are on to something. It was about 2 to 3 times more expensive than the others and well worth it to me.
This link should get you to the Sea Foam Deep Creep page on their site.
http://www.seafoamsales.com/deepCreepConsumer.htm

Re: WD40 or What????

Never heard of Sea foam or Inox until I read this thread. -Real learning curve here. Looking into both.

If they are half as good as they claim, I'll junk WD40, which never was up to much. I get the feeling that WD40 pretends to be a lubricant, which it definitely is not. Squeaks come back after a day or so - we haven't used it for external work for years because of that, but - apart from good ole oil in a can - we haven't found a real quickfix alternative.

Can't get either Seafoam or Inox here, so I've sent for some.

Ciao

Gibbs? Never heard of that either. You guys are way ahead.

And you can use it as an UNDERCOAT?
Doesn't say you can use it as an antifouling though.

Don't tell us, Lubedude - you've got no financial interest in Gibbs, and this is not a commercial, right?

Ciao

Nope, just a product that works better than anything else I have ever used.

Re: WD40 or What????

I will share this with y'all. A long time ago I was trying to remove a pinion nut from a differential but couldn't break it loose. I didn't have access to an impact wrench at that time so I tried heat and penetrating oil... several brands. This old guy who was visiting his son next door came over and said to get him a candle. I did, then he heated the nut with the torch, melted the candle wax onto the threads and backed the nut off easy as could be. I've used that method many times since and had great luck with it. Give it a try sometime.

Well my $.02 worth, WD-40 has it's uses but in my opinion not many. If your looking for a good quality lube, try G-96 made mostely for firearms but I use it on a whole lot more. Not only lubes without build up but is the best metal protector I have found.
Ray

CRC 656 or Corrosion X are what I use in saltwater Pwc's and boats. Corrosion X is best for presserving bare metal. 656 is best fof displacing water and moisture. Have been ussing it for years and had no problems.

Try Gibbs pennetrating lube. Heard about it on Trucks On Spike Tv (formerly TNN) found it online no one in town carried it, when I called the guy said use it spairingly if its dripping off your waisting it! That was the first time someone gave me a sales pitch that turned out to be true!
