i have a 2.3 evinrude and i am wondering if a tune u would be a good idea to solve some simple problems. these problems are is that when i accelerate to top speed the motor dies and 2 the motor runs only with the choke open. sadly i just got the motor two days ago. its used

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

Needing to choke it to run is a sign that the carb is fouled up. Fuel delivery to the carb could also be the culprit. Dieing at full throttle and needing to be choked at all times means it's starving for fuel. Check the fuel lines (make sure they're clear) and clean the carb.
If this motor handn't been used for awhile before you got it or if you don't know it's history definately do all the stuff listed in that link I gave you. Very important. You don't want to get it running right only to have the water pump crap out on you and turn your motor into an anchor.

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

Cleaned carb, new water pump, new spark plugs and new lower unit oil are the basics when I get ahold of a used motor. If it runs great after all that then be happy and take care of it.

Hi,

Maybe I'm misreading this but you said the motor only runs with the choke open and that it wont run with the choke closed

The choke is supposed to be open in order for it to run at anything past just warming it up.

Was this a typo?

Mike :)

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

MCM> i was told that the choke is supposed to be closed after it warms up is this true?

but the problem is is that after it warms up i will close the choke and it then will loss power and then die.

with teh choke open i loose an incredible amount of gas. maybe half a tank in 5-10 minutes but this motor has a small built in tank.

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

If the choke is closed the motor is being starved for air, the fact that it wont run with it closed would be expected

Some people use the choke to stop the motor in place of a kill switch,

Give it a try open, like you said the only time it runs is when its open,

Then find the person who told you that & use the for the anchor :D

Mike

MCM> my other other reason is why does it take so much gas?

people tell me that it is because the choke is always open? is this true? now im really confused.

for info this is a 2.3 evinrude motor

do you need a model numner and serial number?

steve

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

Could it be H2REIC, 1991? Anyway, if it was make after 1963 then the fuel oil mix is 50:1 with TC-W3 outboard oil. That's 1 pint of oil for 6 gallons of gas if you talk amerispeak, 20ml per litre of fuel for the rest of the world. 87 octane (91 RON) gas is usually what you want.

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

MCM got it right. That motor will not run with the choke CLOSED.Only close the choke to cold-start it.when it warms-up open the choke. If you are trying to run with choke closed,it will burn a lot more gas.(Again,Like MCM said, whomever said that would make a really good anchor).
