Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

I wonder whether we have crossed wires here. xstevebbx, when you say choke is closed do you mean that the choke butterfly (the little circular flap inside the carburettor thoat) is closed or are you referring to the position of the choke knob? Maybe we're talking opposites here. If the motor only operates with the choke (lets say) engaged, then maybe we have carb blockage somewhere.

seasport
the motor we are talking about has a knob that you can move from closed or open in order for the motor to run the choke always has to be open

any comments would be great.

thanks,
steve

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

Outboard motors use gas, how much depends on the motor, the person running the motor, & the condition of the motor,

You've never said how much it uses, are you going through a gallon in say 15 min. or an hour?

Mike :)

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

Steve,
Just to clarify.
•
• Choke knob pulled out = choke closed
(the normal position for starting a cold motor)
• Choke knob pushed in = choke open
(the normal position for running the motor after it is started)

Open or closed is refering to the postition of the butterfly valve in the carb throat that Seasport mentioned above. The knob is what makes that happen.

I'm not a professional mechanic (I just like working on and using outboards) so if the following isn't accurate please feel free to correct it. Here's what I see is happening.
When the choke is closed more fuel is forced into the carb. This assists in the starting of a cold motor. If your motor will not run without the choke being closed it is because the carb is fouled up to the point that normal fuel flow can't happen. In my limited experience, when that happens a thourough carb cleaning fixes the problem.
Clogged carbs are very common in outboards that have sat unused for even a couple of months with fuel left in the carb. It evaporates and leaves a sort of gum or varnish behind. I think it was on this site that one mechanic said that this problem was his springtime bread and butter.

1991. :)

That size tank should last at least a couple hours. The carburetor must be leaking a lot of fuel into the engine for it to use it up that fast. Mind you, running with the choke closed will use up gas very fast too.

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

mcm and paul,
would the gas being burnt throuhg so fast have to do with the oil mixture being wrong.
and also about the gas leak paul, sometimes while in the water i can see some gas but is that usual, running with the choke closed is to reffering that the knob says closed right?
sorry for these annoying questions i just started with getting motors and im starting to learn thanks to this site.
thanks, steve

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

Oil/fuel mix souldn't affect the amount of fuel used, and yes if thknob says closed you're trying to run with the choke closed, (bad for fuel consumption and performance)

How does the motor run or perform with the choke open?

Mike

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

with the choke open the motor runs ok but will stall a certain times and die a high speeds often and then will go right back up to speed. today i looked at a littl needle and noticed that it was all the way tightened but i know this is an ajutment needle. with the choke open the gas runs really quick.
thanks, steve

Re: colud a tune up solve my problems

It can't be because of the oil mix. 20:1 wouldn't hurt the engine or even make it run bad. Over time it can cause problems, so just stick with 50:1 from now on.

"Choke closed" is when the choke plate between the plastic cover and the carb restricts the carburetor. I belive on your engine it's operated by moving a lever up or down right? I'm not 100% certain, but I belive the "choke closed" position is when the lever is up. If the engine is running properly, it will run slower and far smokier with the choke closed.

the only thing though is that this is a 2.3 not a 3.3 for your reference.
