Re: Can't get outboard to WOT.

Another question about spark plug boots...should I pull the boot on to the wire and then solder it and crimp it and then pull the boot down over the solder end? Or should I solder and crimp the end and then try and push the boot over the soldered end?

The latter. It's really not that hard to slide the boot over the wire/connector.

I just did what you said, and holy smokes it was like pushing a new born baby back into the womb.....LOL. It was pretty difficult....lots of manhandling it...well it's on there so that is good. I just have to pick up my float and 2 feet 6 inches of plug wire, do the other wire onto the mag plate and then fix the wobbly plate and then put it back together...looking forward to getting it running smooth.

I picked up the float which is of course still made of cork. And I picked up three feet of hypalon wire. I asked the guy if it made any difference as to the type used on two different cylinders and he said no. So I will let you know when I have the mag plate ready for re-install.

Sorry, my computer has been acting up and when I posted it. It wasn't showing that it went through, so I click and click and duh I guess I should've stopped when I had the chance.

That's alright. I'm curious to see how it works out after following the saga. Paul gives excellent detailed advice....

Okay, so I tried the wobble fix on the magneto plate and guess what, now when I tighten the screws to hold the magneto plate, it doesn't move....AT ALL! So i removed the ring and hit it on the underside to try and straighten it out and still I can't get it to move....should I flatten it out like it was again? Then not hit it lightly I guess.....will give you an up to date on what is happening.

Paul had said this in an earlier post pertaining to that:

If you end up overbending it, you may have to remove it and flatten it a bit.
Whatever it takes to make it work...

Re: Can't get outboard to WOT.

Okay, I have fixed the megneto plate problem...I think. I have another question though...

Is the megneto plate supposed to touch the stops that are cast into the block? I mean when I put the throttle in full, the megneto plate is about half an inch away from the stop...Also when I pull back all the way on the throttle to slowest speed, the megneto is far from the stop there too. Does it have to heit both stops in order to get full speed? I mean I don't think it ever hit slow speed but you never know....Please help cause I am almost done with this thing and then I'll test it out on the giant pail of water that I have set up for it...and then on to my other motor...Mercury 7.5 H.P.

It'll never hit the low speed "stop" but it must hit the high speed one cast into the block. It will turn more easily once the engine is spinning, but you should be able to do it now with the throttle. The spring should take over only after it hits the stop.

Is the plate still dragging a bit? How about the spark plug wire routing and low voltage wiring?

Re: Can't get outboard to WOT.

Can I adjust the throttle linkage to get it to full throttle? Maybe the spring is weak and I should get a new one? Is the spring suposed to move the throttle to full position?

The throttle never reached full throttle as far as I can remember. I'll check old pictures I have of it and see if it ever reached the position. Will get back to you...also I have to wait for my buddy to get home from work....I can't for the life of me find my spark plug gapper, so I'll have to wait until he gets home before I can set the points on the magneto plate and torque down the flywheel.

I picked up some Varsol to clean the taper of the crankshaft so I have a very clean fit to torque down the flywheel. It is still raining here so I hope that doesn't affect it too much. Getting excited though.

Got the points set and am looking into getting a new spring. It is part number 0307354, Spring, Lever to Link. $15.91 US plus shipping.

Do you think I need this part? Please advise....thank-you!
