Re: Can't get outboard to WOT.

So I just removed the carburetor and took apart the bowl [it was leaking anyways] and found that the fixed high speed orifice had quite a bit of gunk in it. Now, I do remember very clearly that i did not properly winterize the outboard, and the gasket for the bowl was a rubber that cracked upon install and the bowl leaked. Now I know that did not make any difference, but...I was getting highspeed and so I wonder if the clogged high spped orifice has anything to do with the high speed that I am not getting. Any ideas people? Just curious as to why it would clogg. I mean this whole thing happened last year when the boat was out for it's last run and it would not go to WOT. So I can only hope that a full crab rebuild will fix my dilemma.

Please give me your two cents as it would be very much appreciated.

Picked up the carb kit and am going to soak the carb in carb cleaner...what is the best type? Can you use varsol?

I would just use a spray carb cleaner (Gumout, Etc.). I think the Varsol is just mineral spirits. Spray out all the passages well and blow through them with compressed air....Put her back together and go boatin'....

Check that fuel pump like Xcusme said. Just pop off the pressure line to the bypass cover and look for signs of leakage. That's the reason I asked about it feeding off the top cylinder.

Used a carb cleaner spray, took everything apart, replaced everything that the carb came with except the plugs [was told did not need to replace them unless they are leaking]. Put it back together and replaced it on the outboard. Starter her up and she blew blue, so fiddled with the idle screw until she purred. Now she seems to run nicely but won't know until I take her out on the water, I also redid the link and synch [had to because of the removal of the carb]. I think I got her where I want her. Just a matter of testing it out on the water now...very interested in seeing what happened.

I rebuilt the carb [as you already know], and one of the reasons was a leaking carb. Well guess what...I just checked on the newly rebuild carb and it too is leaking.. I have a 1961 Johnson outboard and my carb is leaking...any guesses on how to seal up the lower carb body gasket to stop it from sealing?

Hi Xcuseme,

I am still waiting to see how she runs on the lake. Haven't had a chance to get her out as the weather here has been really crappy. I will let you know if I got all the kinks worked out though.
Just to let you know I did remove the pressure line to the fuel pump and it just pulses air. There is no fule leak there so i know my diaphram is working great.

Good to hear the fuel pump is ok, it's one less thing in the mix. Post back your findings......when the weather clears.

Re: Can't get outboard to WOT.

Hello All,

So I can't tell if it was because of my buddy and I readjusting the points to the top cylinder, or if it was the rebuilding of the carbureter or if it was the replaceing of the upper spark plug, but....my outboard finally runs like a champ. I had it out finally today and it ran great, no hesitation, no flat spots, just a clean powerful rip across the lake. It idles great too, I have trolled with it and I love it. So a great big thank-you to all who have helped in this endeaver. I greatly appreciated it and now I will start working on my 7.5 H.P. Mercury. Thanks again to all of you!!!
