    Strange exhaust behavior during winterizing

Ok for info on the actual solidify temps look on West Marines site. They have a good info page on AFs. From memory both the -50 & -60 start to get solid at about 12 above zero and 5 above zero, respectively, IIRC. In a cast iron engine where there’s no “flex” like plastic pipe you don’t want...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

Those of us with older carbed boats have the collectable car hobby to thank for this, the demand for carb parts and new carbs, has kept this alive far longer than it would have because when EFI came out the 'experts' proclaimed that carbs were now obsolete.

Best thing you can do for yourself, is get and learn how to use, an antifreeze refractometer. Like this... I use this when I mix my own....

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

Agree 100%. For people with older boats, a carb is much easier to deal with, because they are all supported in the aftermarket, even the Quadrajet which has not been made since like 1990. And with carbs you have choices, if you have a Quadrajet that's too corroded inside to rebuild, you can...

Yet that’s what all inboards & I/Os are stuck with now a days!

First pic shows the pick up tube & anti siphon valve second pic is testing them for vacuum leaks…. Vacuum leaks in the pick up tube, anti siphon valve or fuel line can cause this problem as can vacuum leaks at your fuel filter. If you run the boat on a seperate outboard tank you can isolate...

You have a fuel pick up tube and an anti siphon valve. That’s the barbed fitting your fuel line attaches to. There is a spring loaded ball inside that valve. It’s there to shut off fuel flow if the fuel line between the tank & fuel pump leaks so you don’t get a bilge full of gasoline. Make sure...

I’m not familiar with your engine if you can take a zoomed out pic so I can see the hose routing to the manifolds & elbows that would help. I’m guessing you have a Mercruiser with the warm manifolds set up where the elbows & manifolds have separate feeds from the thermostat housing. Let’s see a...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

If you've never done it before it can be intimidating. I had to do it because my head gaskets started leaking back in '16, and I wanted to try to save the engine, since it was always a good runner. And being that I am in salt water, raw water cooled engine, I didn't think I could get it apart...

changing from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel carburetor

Another data point I can recall from the past, not boats but cars. 2 of our family vehicles 1972 Chevrolet Impala 5.7 V8, 2bbl Rochester, 3 speed GM Hydramatic 1975 Olds Delta 88, 5.7 V8, 4bbl Rochester Quadrajet, 3 speed GM Hydramatic the Olds weighed a few hundred lbs more than the Chevy, not...

For Cobra guys who have water in the gear oil….

www.sterndrive.info AKA TC Electronics and Marine in Ontario, Canada also forgot to mention, the water pump adapter has 2 o rings on it, a large one on its circumference and a smaller one on the back side that seals around where the water pump shaft bearing is. That smaller one on mine was...

For Cobra guys who have water in the gear oil….

One of the main causes of this is the water pump seal in the water pump adapter which is what the impeller housing bolts onto. There is a you tube video by Micheal Roemer that explains an easier way to do this than what’s in the shop manual. To change that seal the water pump adapter has to come...

    Strange exhaust behavior during winterizing

Yes just disconnect the hose feeding the manifold at the thermostat housing & fill each manifold. Make sure to use PG antifreeze not EG and for engine protection. I use the -100 because the -50 or -60 gets hard at a few degrees above zero. Depends on how cold it gets where you are…

Agreed I don't like that single point drain, you don't know if the block drains for sure drained, if in freshwater it might work OK but here in the salt pond, I wouldn't trust it. In fact sometimes you have to rod the drains out just to get it to drain. Some say to remove the whole single point...
