Glastron GXL 235 anti siphon valve location?

There has to be access to the fuel tank connections and fuel gauge wiring. Sometimes it’s a round cover screwed into the deck, about 5-6” in diameter. My boat has a rectangular panel that can be removed…the anti siphon valve is screwed onto the fuel pick up tube. The fuel line from the...

    salt water in single cylinder

Agreed that’s what the last pic looks like. When you get it back together (or get a reman) be careful with where you set the timing. Apparently the 4.3s are more prone to detonation and I’m not sure what Merc’s specs are but OMC specified only 12* of centrifugal advance and base timing was 1* if...

    salt water in single cylinder

Cast iron components in most fresh water last indefinitely. You should see boats from the USA used only in fresh water regions. The engines look like new, same with outdrives. We in the salt, change our elbows/manifolds every 5-7 years, at least the elbows, in fresh water, some last...

    2006 Volvo out drive thumping

They use them on both ends of our '17 Wrangler rear driveshaft and on the front end of the front driveshaft. I'd say they are plenty strong enough. My '07 Jeep 5.7 has CVs on both ends of the front driveshaft. It has 375 ft lbs of torque....

I have often wondered why sterndrives didn’t use CV joints instead of double cardan joints….

    salt water in single cylinder

It’s because the engine companies look to save money any way they can & much of the USA is freshwater so it’s not a drawback. A closed system now a days adds over 2 grand USD to repower cost. If I repowered with a reman 4.3 sure I’d add it. But it is close to 2 grand!

If you're wondering if your anti siphon valve is stuck, or clogged, here's a test....

I had mine replaced years ago, always wondered if there was a way to test it to make sure it's not starting to stick again. I have a pressure and vacuum tester for the outdrive, so I rigged up a way to put a vacuum on a new un-installed anti siphon valve and see at what point it opens, about -2"...

    salt water in single cylinder

o oil analyses 2011-2024, see the elevated sodium in 2011 and 2015? and associated high wear levels of Al and Fe, and how they gradually dropped after the repairs were done in 2017? I used the Fel/Pro marine head gaskets they seemed to seal well.... I think anybody running a raw water cooled...

    salt water in single cylinder

So the moral of the story is that oil analyses help to avoid problems or catch them while they are small! I do 3 things at end of each season: Oil analysis Compression test Scope exhaust elbows with inspection camera

    salt water in single cylinder

I know that some will dispute this but after running my present boat in Long Island salt water (23 seasons) I have seen that winterizing using proper antifreeze (PG but with corrosion inhibitors) seems to prolong the life of certain components…for example after 23 seasons in the salt I have...

    salt water in single cylinder

Given salt water use it's also possible that one head rotted through behind the valve seat area. How many seasons in the salt does this one have on it? If you get 15+ you're doing well, 20 is unusual.

    2006 Volvo out drive thumping

When in shallow water, the highest I ever have mine is about 1/2 way up, I marked this position on the trim gauge so I know it's up but not too far up in shallows. All the way up is only for idle and only for brief periods. I'd try to narrow down the sound with a mechanic's stethoscope and then...

1998 Volvo/OMC - When shifting to forward, the motor stalls. It runs fine on muffs.

Those hoses can be tough to get off, I use picks made to remove radiator hoses & silicone spray. Slide the lower hose down the Y pipe….With the everything in place you won’t be able to feel the flapper pin it’s behind the lower hose you see in my pic above…

2016 Mercruiser 6.2L ECT DTS Axius Cooling System Issue

That much for gaskets? Well maybe the consolation is they have lasted this long it seems, problem being even if there are no leaks, no way to determine if they are clogging unless you take em apart. For the 8mm holes I'd suggest a specially calibrated coat hanger wire to rod out those holes. I...

    1988 candia 180 4.3

On these the timing is set very conservative, 6* BTDC but with 89 octane fuel, with 87 you’re supposed to set it at 1* BTDC. Centrifugal advance on that Prestolite is only 12* @ 3200 as per my OMC shop manual. So even with 89 octane fuel you’re only getting 18* total.

    Power Steering Cylinder Replacement

The other alternative to pulling the engine is to see if you can find a fiberglass shop that could make the rear enclosure removable with quick disconnect fasteners like race cars and small airplanes use. Pulling an engine just to change a starter or a steering actuator is a big insult from...

2016 Mercruiser 6.2L ECT DTS Axius Cooling System Issue

I thought the same thing Ted, have the risers ever been off? If not it could be something like that. Is the exhaust on these newer Mercs cast iron or aluminum? I never checked my brothers 4.5 when he had one. He had one mild overheat (simple solution rod out the water intakes) but that was...

    Power Steering Cylinder Replacement

Unless that rear engine enclosure is removable you’re pulling the engine. I did this job a few years ago on my OMC Cobra, my boat is old school so it all comes apart. Had to pull the rear seats & remove the exhaust on both sides. Removing the cotter pins for the mounting bolts was very...
