    Looks to me like that's one of the units that has a gasket under the water pump seal. I would think that if that gasket is bad, gear oil could leak around it.

    It could do it if the shift rod and/or bushing are worn badly enough, or if the sealing o-ring is broken. I have a '56 15hp that looks even worse. Needs a shift rod, probably the bushing as well. You can feel the difference as you slide the o-ring onto it, tight at first, loose when in place.

    The supply situation in the U.S. is horrendous, for various reasons - high demand, labor shortages, etc. Could be the U.S. vendor is working with older stock, and when that runs out the next order from his supplier, if it ever shows up, will come with a dramatic price increase.
