Fairly normal for a 2 stroke after idling.-----Any water getting into the gearcase?----Thermostat installed and working properly.

Doubt that gear oil would find it's way up into the exhaust housing.
It could do it if the shift rod and/or bushing are worn badly enough, or if the sealing o-ring is broken.
I have a '56 15hp that looks even worse. Needs a shift rod, probably the bushing as well. You can feel the difference as you slide the o-ring onto it, tight at first, loose when in place.

Looks to me like that's one of the units that has a gasket under the water pump seal. I would think that if that gasket is bad, gear oil could leak around it.

Best to do what Racer says especially with the older ones. Much more likely water gets in than oil getting out the top.

What is your gas to oil ratio on that old girl?

Gee, smell the stuff. If it is gear oil, it will stink from the sulfur in it. If it is 2 cycle oil, it will smell like gas or oil.

If water can get in then oil can come out, especially if there is enough water is getting in to push the oil out. I pulled a gear case a couple of years ago because of an oil slick in the slip. The gear case had way more water in it than oil and was floating oil out a bad seal on a top fill plug.

I changed the gear oil out and have checked it a few times after use and haven't seen any milky white in the oil. I'll have to check the thermostat but I haven't had any issues with it overheating so far.

Thanks, I'll check the shift rod again. It looked pretty good when I pulled it out but I wasn't really focused on it.
