Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

I did check the tach once with a digital tach on the harmonic balancer. It was on then, good call, will check it again. Current prop is 15.25 diameter, would a 15 make any difference? Sounds like I need to open the choke and give it more air. Thanks gents

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

I put 20 hours on the new motor last weekend, 10 hours of break in, change oil and retorque exhaust parts. Ran well, started, idled, all in all pretty happy. Wondering about a couple of things, propping, at WOT I saw 4700 RPM (41 mph). My ole pre Vortec listed WOT at 4400 to 4800. The new motor...

    5.7 LX starter

I will remove it this weekend and do some ciphering. The existing starter had 3 lugs, 2 if you don't count the one to the solenoid. Seems the new ones all have another lug. I remember seeing that before on here, but dont recall what the additional lug is for?

    Uhuh, thanks, any particular brand?

    Will check that. Thanks!

    5.7 LX starter

Thanks for that, I reused the original starter, presumably from 1996/97. Assuming old starter/old bolts should be OK?

    5.7 LX starter

1996/97 5.7 LX 0K158784 recently replaced the old motor with a new long block. Starts, runs, however the starter is noisy, I would not call it a grinding noise. I know SBC's often require shimming the starter, which we did not do. I will investigate further this weekend, I just thought I would...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

My Apologies for my earlier reply to this post, I was slightly offended by the transom comment as I spent 5 years getting this boat in the water. I was pretty methodical about what was done, plenty of learning along the way. I did create a album here if your interested...

Yep, Its pretty heavy, plenty of boats running around heavier with a single 350, 26 foot Tollycrafts come to mind, then again that was not enough engine for that boat. However I have taken to heart what has been said here and its possible the old motors life was shortened if we were over...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

It is pretty heavy when loaded (close to 7K), bottom is narrow and that maybe helps. It did quite well with the other motor, typical cruise around 3200 give or take depending on conditions and typical cruise was 25-32 MPH at 2 MPG. WOT about 38-39 MPH. I rarely give it WOT other than to check...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

I think both the 5700 and 6200 use 906 heads, This is what I recall when I was shopping, the 6200 used Inconel and the 5700 was not. "L31 Vortecs comes in two different casting numbers, 10239906 (#906) or 12558062 (#062). Originally, the stock #906 casting head was available in two versions...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

In regards to heads, specific details can be hard to ferret out. When I was "shopping" and decided to buy a new long block I considered a new GM 6200 briefly, I say briefly as They were NA at that time. Essentially the 5700 and 6200 are the same except for stroke, the head castings are the same...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

I appreciate the explanation, I have run a paper gasket the last several seasons w/o any corrosion or issues with temp sensors. It was a cast iron intake on the old motor, now aluminum, which shouldn't matter. However the housing is painted.

Thanks, I make luck. One valve warped because someone took some heads off a engine or bought them from a bone yard, touched up the seats and stuck them back in. These are $4.00 valves at todays prices in Alaska. We bought the motor in 2012, they would have been cheap valves then, IF they had...

Is the housing not grounded through the bolts into the intake manifold...?

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

Good thoughts for sure, transom was redone, has a knock sensor, verified that it works with a timing light and fluke scope. Tapping on the block retarded the timing and scope could show us how many milliseconds it was retarded. Motor was rebuilt by prior owner of motor for his own use. He...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

New LB came with new balancer, took a degree wheel and marked it. Good idea on the hose for water, I have to attend to another project before breakup, if no OD by next weekend I will give it a go with the hose. Motor has been primed but will crank it over with the plugs out to get fuel through...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

New motor is in, a few minor details such as the boss on the new water pump was not machined and skewed the idler. Got a minor education in SBC water pump bypass. Waiting to get the OD back and should be ready to fire up. Spring is coming!
