Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

Other concerns, maybe start new thread? I made a connection to the purple wire, merc had a crimped/soldered? & taped connection for the original 5 wires. The copper strands in a couple of the wires were black, specifically the two going to the ignition and knock module's. They are relatively...

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

Pump draws a hair over 1 amp, if I deadhead it goes up slightly. Once the motor is primed (OIL) it takes less than one revolution of the drill (distributor) to close the contacts. I think that's good enough. Will use purple wire, no relay, off to the races.

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

Good idea, will investigate that. I Will prime the motor this weekend and see how long it takes to close the contracts on the oil pressure switch.

Look close, purple is B+ from ignition switch

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

The purple wire on my motor powers the coil, ignition module, knock sensor, gauges and alternator.... you might be thinking of a old dodge with a ballast resistor......

    Carb choice.

Seems like I recall Qjets sometimes had issues with the bowls draining, the fix was to epoxy the plugs in the bottom so they dont drain. I dont know if that was a issue with your particular carb model.....? And this was a automotive issue, I dont know if it applies to marine applications.

    Hour Meter Wiring

Hour meter could be wired to a oil pressure switch, that way the clock is only ticking when the engine is actually running, more wires to the helm unless you put the Hobbs meter near the motor.

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

Thanks Scott, I presume your statement "the fuel pump will not be powered during cranking" is referring to the fact that there will not be oil pressure initially? While that may be true I dont see a real issue with developing oil pressure before starting, particularly if the motor has sat for a...

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

Just finished reading several more posts on this subject and realized I identified the oil pressure switch as n/c and it is actually n/o. You guys undoubtedly knew that.

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

Thanks, starter has two lugs, probaly hard to see in the pics. Yellow/red is the momentary hot from the ignition switch to engage the solenoid. I think I will use the purple wire as that is ignition B+, as suggested I may need to install a relay to take the load off of the ignition switch...

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

I wondered about this, I dont know what the amp draw is on the new pump. I do know the purple wire is not very big, maybe 14 awg and probably shouldn't increase the amp load across the ign switch contacts.

Connecting a electric fuel pump to 5.7LX

1997 5.7 LX Alpha 1 Gen 2 Looking for advice on connecting power to a electric fuel pump. I am in the process of replacing the old motor with a new long block. Bought the motor and electric fuel pump "kit" from Michigan Motorz which included a NC oil pressure switch. The wiring diagram MM...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

Thanks all, I am not interested in replacing parts just cuz... If so I wouldn't have rescued a 40 year old boat that had seen better day! The spline looks good with little wear, alignment was good and coupling looks fine, now that I understand what misalignment will do I know what to look for...

Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

I know, I know... I only get on here when I need help and am thankful you guy's are here. I am working on a 1997 5.7 LX Alpha 1 Gen II. The existing motor was pre-vortec and rebuilt by others, I tuliped a valve last year and had the heads rebuilt. After I got it back together I realized it was...

    5.7LX rebuild question

"low step" is what the guy ate mikes Carb called it last year when I was looking for some replacement rods while rebuilding. I did not ask him what he meant but I will find out. I did find some NOS quicksilver rods/springs/pistons and used those last season. Maybe overthinking this whole thing...

    5.7LX rebuild question

I was going to order the 1408 kit, I guess the question is, will the two step rods work with the low step jet? (That's what Mikes C. refereed to it as). I kinda assume they will, I just need to pay attention to whats going on. I have the bible and have read through it several times. I did find...

    5.7LX rebuild question

Thinking about tuning this carb and Merc did some tricky bizness with 3 step rods and a low step main jet in my Weber ( 9781S 3106). I think I need to buy a assortment of Edlebrock/Carter springs, rods and jets .... but what size to buy? Mikes Carburetors says they dont have a direct...
