Does this timing advance rod (1985 50HP) look factory? Should it be bent like this?

Here's what I have on my own 50HP (a 1987) but I just figured maybe my dad's older generation was different. His in that first picture doesn't look quite right so I did wonder if it was rigged up. I wonder if his timing is affected in a bad way by it. His motor does not run well but he has a...

Does this timing advance rod (1985 50HP) look factory? Should it be bent like this?

My dad sent me this picture of his Force 50. This looks like maybe damage. Should this be bent?

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

It's pretty tight clearance getting the flywheel on but once it's on, it clears and spins just fine. I should run a small (say 0.010") feeler gauge or business card or similar around the edge in a rotation or two to see how tight it now is. It seems to be ok because it's not dragging.

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

Well the 1987 glue held for almost 40 years. So that's very good. I'm surprised we don't see this failure more often with these old engines. My flywheel is the Prestolite version. It didn't have a lot of glue on the magnet and flywheel. It does now. I double coated both before sticking together.

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

Reglued the magnet to the flywheel and I now have around 300VAC (no DVA) coming out of the two blue wires from the stator. So it should run again if all goes well. Nice when things kind of turn out. I say kind of because I haven't hooked it all back up yet. Going to let the epoxy cure a few days...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

I will probably use my West Systems standard marine epoxy since I have it on hand and don't want to spend $75. But here's what I found in another thread here (looks to be good info):

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

Ok you guys talked me into building a DVA. It's still reading very low on charging and spark generating coil. Like right around a volt DC there. I think I found the problem. Still not sure why the smoke however. The magnet had come unglued from the flywheel due to rust, heat, and time (it is a...

1 ohm resistance across 1987 50HP charging coil. Ok?

I couldn't find a chart for this coil online. I don't believe I'm getting either charging or ignition voltage from this stator. I get 750 ohms on the ignition coil of the stator and just 1 ohm on the charging coil.

    Motor dies then won't start

Also, it can have a clog somewhere in the fuel system (tank pickup strainer in tank>>fuel lines>primer bulb>fuel lines>fuel pump screen filter>fuel lines>carb. All of that can eventually plug with use. The pickup in the tank is where I'd start then work your way to the carb. Also, air can get in...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

This is the two blue wires for generating CDI energizing voltage. This is AC so there should be no polarity here. I need to check the rectifier feeding taps from the stator and the DC after the rectifier too and see if it's putting out battery charging voltage when cranking.

Is this article true? I have had pretty good luck with Force motors.

This article makes Force look like an antiquated company with engines that quickly detonate to destruction. I've never had any trouble with the mechanics (moving metal parts) in my force engines. Have I just been lucky? https://everythingaboutboats.org/chrysler-force/

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

Pretty sure the stator somehow burned. I was thinking it was reading 200V approx when cranking but I failed to notice the decimal point. It's generating 0.200VAC approx. So I would say either magnets are demagnetized (they do seem weak) or more likely somehow something weird happened to the...

0.25 Volts AC from stator. But ohms out ok. What to check?

Wouldn't the AC setting on a regular multimeter give a close reading to what the stator is putting out? I realize the trigger is putting out a pretty low voltage pulse, but the stator is generating 200+ VAC if in spec. I would think that would show up at least close with a regular multimeter...

0.25 Volts AC from stator. But ohms out ok. What to check?

Either the stator has failed since then or more likely I was not seeing the decimal point when taking the original measurement with the multimeter on the stator. Even without a DVA, I should be able to see a reasonable amount of AC coming through I'd think since the stator generates pretty high...

0.25 Volts AC from stator. But ohms out ok. What to check?

My Force 50HP Stator coil should read around 750 ohms resistance which it does, and no continuity to engine ground. However when cranking, I'm only getting around 0.25 Volts AC from the two blue wires. I have the Pre-D model (1987). I believe I should be getting around 200VAC with a multimeter...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

I have the pre-D ignition system where the two magneto shutoff wires (brown at the mag or White and Blue on the key and terminal strip) are shorted together when it turns off. My theory is the 12V Red at the key was somehow shorted to the magneto wires at the key (white and blue wires). The key...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

I tested the Trigger Coils with the hand held o-scope and am getting signal but it's only 1 VAC or less. Not sure if that's ok or not. Both read the same. I'm not sure that a magnet hasn't come loose from the flywheel but probably not since the stator coil is putting out 300 VAC. I'd assume the...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

I tried disconnecting the two magneto terminals on the key side the day it happened and no start. I tried on the engine side yesterday afternoon and also no spark. Going to try disconnecting and measuring the rectifier for a short or just cranking with it disconnected. I measured 300VAC from...

CDI troubleshooting guide says "Disconnect the rectifier". Why?? How does it effect spark?

My understanding of CDI is: stator generates AC voltage to charge capacitor in the CDI. Trigger(s) send signal to solid state electronics to discharge with the engine's timing to power the coils producing the spark. The rectifier turns the charging coil's AC voltage into DC to recharge the...

Force 50 HP. Rain got in key switch. Wires smoked. Now Cranks but No Spark.

1988 (Prior to D) model. I just measured the stator and trigger coils resistances and they seem to be in spec: 700 ohms for stator 48 ohms per trigger coil 130 ohms spark plug wire to ground The one value I'm not at all sure about is that the brown shut off wire from one CDI pack to the other...
