    im about to install hei distributor with new cables and new electronitc shift assist into 1989 351w. any advise before i start. should i up grade my spark plugs for this type of distributor . can i use the platnum four prong plugs or should i go with standard plugs.

    5.8 not starting .

    I have a 1989 omc 5.8 just replaced spark plugs and installed new quadrojet carb . Fuel is geting to carb and bat is brand new .     shell nitrogen enriched fuel causing problems?

    I have used shell nitrogen enriched fuel in my 5.0 mercruiser and my 3.0 both are alpha ones. After using these fuels I have had problems starting both engines. Is this coincidence or should i stay away from that fuel.

    is it a 5.8 or 7.5?

    I know this is probably a dumb question but I just got an 1989 bayliner 2455 and it is supposed to have an cobra omc 5.8. But looking at the spot where the carb was it has four holes all the same size. And the clymer omc book shows that to be the 7.5 . How can I tell the diff.thanks

    replace mercruiser 5.0 alpha one with king cobra v8

    I have 1991 bayliner alpha one 5.0 that has cracked everything. And I also have an omc king cobra v8 1988 that is in good shape. Van I remove the mercruiser motor and replace it with the omc cobra. I will replace out drive and everything.

    alpha one 5.0 wont start

    i have replaced slave solinoid and spark plugs . engine turns over but just as it is about to start a small puff of "smoke" comes up from under the under head gasket area. i am hoping it is just a gasket problem and not cracked block. any ideas?
