I'm looking at a '99 Yamaha 50hp 4 stroke. This is the first gen outboard and I've heard it was troublesome. It is $2500. I can get a second gen 50hp for $3500.
Is there a big difference between the 1st and 2nd gen of these outboards, enough to spend more money on the 2nd?

Has anyone used some sort of rubber beaching matt for fiberglass boats? My idea was to use a set of waders, jump out in shallow water, put down a thick rubber matt (the kind with holes so it will sink) and pull the boat onto it.
