    Cooling orifice tube

What's a cooling orifice tube? Typically the temperature is taken at the thermostat housing. You may want to get the cooling flow diagram for your engine. You can also use an IR thermometer to sample the temperature at different areas of the cooling system and compare it to the gauge. In my...

    Too big a battery harmful?

Sounds like a made-up story. The starter will draw what it needs. The only thing with 2 batteries is that the voltage drop while cranking will probably be less than with just the one, which can be a good thing. Many boat electrical system are set-up with just that . . . a way to use more than...

Overheat after high RPM run 350 MPI from 2001 with bravo one

It sounds like you have an open cooling system (i.e. raw water cooling). One thing that can happen with this type of system is that the water running through the engine can/will come to a boil if the engine gets too hot and cause the temperature fluctuations that you mentioned. As mentioned...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I joined up an OB conversion group on FB the other day. Not many members (300 ish), and it looks like the sweet spot for doing OB conversions is older boats, traditional transoms, and low tech controls. Also added a boat (Sailfish) to my list of prospects. CY 338 OB - Wicked pricey -...

    LiFePO Batteries ???

Quick Update. . . I ran into some engine issues today while waiting for dock space to open up to pick up the crew. The stbd engine started throwing fits the alarm went off, then it died. I got it started, but I wanted to check it out once we got to our anchoring spot for the day. No codes...

    Boat age vs financing.

My brother recently took a new job selling used (lightly used) boats. He told me that a lot of people finance their boats. I've never been 'allowed' to do that. Of course there are some options (personal loan, home equity, etc) if the boat itself is not 'eligible' for financing.

    O2 Sensor codes . . .

Thanks everyone for the help on this. Looks like I'll be buying the special socket and swapping left & right to see if the problem moves with the sensor.

    O2 Sensor codes . . .

Thanks @muc . . . Looks like I got to get one of those O2 sensor sockets to do the swapping. In my engine voltage efforts, I did have an issue or 2 where one of the 10amp fuses got knocked loose. I'll have to check those again.

    O2 Sensor codes . . .

I've been getting some O2 sensor faults on my port engine, and it looks like I don't have the proper 'Mercruiser PCM 112' manual to get more information & trouble shooting. The engine manual does not list the codes and refers to the PCM manual  From my Diacom Software, I am getting...

    Math problem

My math says you have 3.09 oz of oil per gallon (about 40:1) . . . so you need to dump about 1 gallon and fill it up with straight gas to get back to 2.56 oz / gallon ( approx 50:1)

    Water Pressure Sensor . . .

The water pressure sensor on my starboard engine is starting to act up. It starts out reading at 30+ psi when the engines initially start (should be in the 5-7 psi range at low RPM's) and after a while comes down to more believable readings. So, tomorrow is 'boat maintenance day' . . . I...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I'm thinking the conversion to OB of my existing boat would be about $100K. (not $150K), regardless . . . it would be a whole lot of work and managing of logistics on my part. I'd rather turn my existing boat into $$$,$$$ and then break open my piggy bank and go from there. Cruiser Yacht is...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Yup, I got to get the Admiral 'on-board' (S-T-S) . . . I'm using old(er) age to my advantage. When I bought the CY 338, I didn't think the I/O maintenance would be too much of an issue, but the amount of normal effort is catching up to me. I've compiled a list of possible boats . . . CY 338...

Seeking Mechanic in South Cape Cod

@starksy423 - I'm in Falmouth . . . Since I do all of my own work, I don't know of any good boat mechanics. If I come across any names, I'll gladly share them.

    Solar battery chargers

I think 'we' had sized the solar panel at 400 watts (which seems a bit large), so maybe you can start with a 200 watt and see how that goes. To charge a 50% depleted battery in a few days time via solar will take more than a trickle. Check out the solar controllers from Renogy and/or EPEver...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Lots, to think about. In the age of low-tech boating an OB conversion would be much more straight forward. With the hi-tech systems and controls, it is another story, so it seems. I did get a follow-up email from Cruisers Yacht saying that they had not done a conversion to outboards, but are...

Used Boat Values - Value tools

-> What is the boat worth to you? -> What are the odds that a seller listing their boat for a higher price than you want will come down to your price? It is all part of price negotiation.

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

They sent drawings and pictures, so I can understand the differences in the two versions. (I/O vs OB). The key thing with the CY 338 is that the transom is inset 44" from the edge of the swim deck, whereas many other boats are inset about 30". So, 44" + 'mounting well' (nearly 60") is a bit...
