    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

    A 6 HP Johnson / Evinrude from 1966 to 1979 are ideal.----The 66 to 76 used the universal ( low cost ) magneto.-----Need to know how to clean breaker points on occasion.----The 77 to 79 had electronic ignition.-----These are just wonderful motors if in good condition.

    I would remove pinion gear.----Remove driveshaft.-----Propshaft might then fall out.

    Old rubber hoses not firmly attached.-----Or the " classic " phenomenon of lean sneeze on a 2 stroke.-----Also the reason that the VRO has a pulse limiter ( AKA flow fuse ) to prevent the air motor on the VRO to blow up / crack into 5 pieces.

    Mercury 7.5 HP, 9.8 HP Flywheel P/N question

    The 7.5 models usually have a sticker on the block.-----It says ---COMET----in white letters.------The 7.5 has basically the same internal parts as the 9.8 model.------The intake ports on the 7.5 are SMALLER , thus restricting airflow and power output.

    Electric tilt was available as an option in 72.--Check E-bay perhaps.---A CMC unit is your best bet today.

    A factory manual has the diagrams.----Does the " extra " smoke clear up after 10 seconds ?

    Test in a bucket with water 8" above the impeller !!-----Your test on a lift did not work because a MOVING boat feeds water into the pump.----Look for and see the water intake screen behind the propeller.-----The 2 water pump grommets are easy to replace and easily found at any boat shop...

    Replace the hoses going to the fittings and put small zip ties on them!-----And " excess smoke " on startup is normal on a 2 stroke.----That smoke alarms folks.----And in my opinion that is because the lubrication in a 2 stroke is not well understood !

    Are you seeing this " leakage " with the hose off a fitting , with the motor running?-----Is this part of the oil recirculation ?

    Repeat.-----In a test bucket the water must be 8" ABOVE the impeller.----Most old time outboard shops would have that pump housing in stock.

    Crankcase pressure is not that high.----And a bad reed valve would mean LOWER crankcase pressure

    I believe this is a motor that uses a lot of Johnson / Evinrude parts.----Is there a 6 digit number on the pump housing ?----Water must be above the impeller ( 6"-8" ) at all times in a bucket.--And if the water tube stayed in the pump housing it must be installed first before the lower unit is...

    Open low speed mixture screws 1/8th turn at a time.----Test / repeat as needed.----Often makes the bogging go away.

    Anybody know what factory was used to cast these V-block loopers?----Domestic or imported ?

    Evinrude no neutral

    Remove plate on side of exhaust housing.-----Make sure notches on shift rods are lined up with the hole.----Put screws back in.----Check shift adjustment at shift lever on side of the motor.
