    The copper tube MUST be installed in the midsection BEFORE installing the lower unit.-----Water in a test bucket MUST be 6" above the impeller.

    ???----If coil generates 3/8" spark , you should have spark at the plug boots.----From 1008 miles away I believe there is an issue with cap or rotor.-----Or boots where wires screw into the cap.

    Load test your battery.----Inspect battery cables.-----Take starter apart for inspection / ohm test on armature.----What name / part # is on the replacement starter ?-----Many Mercury starters look the same, but they are not all the same.

    There are people at ----aomci----Who have lots of these bypass covers.-----Post a wanted ad there.----There are other places that have these covers as well.---Depends on your location and whether shops work on these motors.---Some might have 1 or 2 under a work bench.----

    What are the colors of the wires going to that plug?----Might have to do with ---trim / tilt-----tachometer----Oil injection system ( Not found on yours )

    It is SCRAP !----And I started repairing outboards in 1968.-----Have also worked on steam turbines that produced around 1,000,000 HP.

    The air line on your motor now is---- NOT A PULSE LINE.----Air only flows one way.

    There is NOTHING you can do from the outside of this SCRAP gearcase to make the shift rod go down all the way.----See post #2

    If the shift rod can not go down all the way the propshaft will not come out.-----The damage makes it obvious to me that brute force is needed.-----Sorry to be blunt.----And I am not struggling to work on these simple ( to me ) gearcases.

    Did you read post #2 ??----Yes, a hacksaw is required.---Pinion / forward gear are scrap.----Propshaft is scrap.-----Yes, the housing is scrap.----Bearing / shift housing is scrap.----I have all the parts to fix something like that.---Which makes it easy for me.

    I believe you are " golden " then-----Sorry for comparing your posted pictures , with the struggle you are having.----This gearcase issue is an easy fix in my opinion.----No need for my input on this.

    You have to remove the 2 big snap rings.------Reverse gear will fall out.------Then remove pinion nut.----Then remove driveshaft.----Then propshaft might come out.
