Estate sale lot of 18 - 25hp motors - Compression gauge variables.

There was never a decompression feature on the 22 cube models.----I find it hard to believe compression higher than 130 PSI on one.----Then again someone may have shaved the cylinder head looking for extra power.

Oops----Missed that it was a 1982.-----But that is CLASSIC damage found on the V-4 and V-6 crossflow models.

    What could cause this

Common issue with these motors.---Perhaps a plugged carburetor jet.----Perhaps water guides / diverters were blocking cooling water flow and overheating caused this.-----And every one of these motors suffers from broken piston rings.---Shocking what a rebuild costs at a shop.-----That is if you...

    Transom replacement or design flaw?

It has been noted that the cap on the transom is cracked.----Makes it weak !-----So find aluminum channel ( about 7' ) to make a new cap at the top 3'.----And also on the bottom with 4' long.----Or make channel from square tube.----Make the plywood 10" deep and full width as it now.----Install...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

A 10 HP motor can idle ( 45 gallon drum ) for about 1 hr with no fear of the water getting too hot.---No need to run a hose into the barrel at all.
  14. R

    1981 Mercury 7.5 2 stroke

On his 7.5 / 9.8 models the thermostat does have something to do with the pee stream.

    kiekhaefer

But you see a lot more old OMC motors,----OMC used stainless shafts around 1950.---Mercury switched 25 years later.------No special tools or shimming required on those " stupid gearboxes " either.
