    Safety Equipment

Great addition! Long ago my wife learned to drive, etc. She is typically the one to get us underway and dock the boat.

    Safety Equipment

Sharing my listing of safety equipment I carry on board in the hope it provides newer boaters something to think about. Safety equipment is not always at the forefront of what we think about, my own early experience demonstrating that > I owned my first boat when I was 19 and I did not think one...

    4.3GL VP Fuel Pump Issues

First off, nice posting. Detailed and you are following a logical progression in your troubleshooting. To make sure I am fully understanding I am going to repeat in my own words what I think is a summary: You apply 12V to pump with a jumper and it runs with a confirmation of outputting gas...

1998 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI Backfiring Under Load & Loss of Power

Looks like a blown head gasket, perhaps from an overheat in the past… You are looking at pulling the heads at a minimum and if you have led a good life you are only doing head gasket replacement (needs to be marine). Pull the heads and post lots of pics of your findings…

2007 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI Fuel Pump issue

I cannot attest to if the HP pump would pull thru all the way back to the tank but sounds like it does - at least a little bit. Bottom line is you need a new pump. Here is my suggestion and assumes you have an OEM fuel pump. Buy one of the AfterMarket (AM) pumps available at places like Amazon...

2007 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI Fuel Pump issue

Not sure I 100% understand. With 50 PSI at the fuel rail thru the range of RPMs what is the fuel delivery issue you are experiencing? I.e. what caused you to post? Was it that you were simply curious about what your pump was outputting, and you see zero on the low pressure side so how can that...

1998 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI Backfiring Under Load & Loss of Power

Was this the same shop that said the cap and rotor were good? Point being suspect everything they did. Overfilled oil (when boat is level on the trailer or in the water) is not good. Does it look clean (a nice golden and see thru color?). Does the dipstick smell like gas? Is the oil back and...

1998 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI Backfiring Under Load & Loss of Power

Nice and through explanation and agree, this is the place to help you. To get started there is still a bit of ‘shot gunning’ required as its clear there was a lack of maintenance on this engine / boat For the Ign System, only the wires remain to be replaced, so do it. As for checking the...

Here is one that also has a ‘dash light’ connection > if you have dash lights it will also link

    Stripped threads on carburetor

This is a challenge and while I have never tried to do this, it occurs to me that anything less than 1000% positive of no leaks is not worth it. Leaking fuel on a boat that could result in a fire is not like having a fire at home where you can simply walk outside. I have read in other threads...

Upgrading Merc A1-G1 Oil Pressure Light with an actual oil pressure gauge.

This is doable but will require a new sending unit (sensor). Here is one I found on Amazon for a great price link. And yes, three wires: +12V and Ground to the display and then another single wire from the new sensor to the display. For that wire you could use the existing wire run that the...

My 1998 Seaswirl boat wiring harness has a lot of corrosion in the 12+ pin connector

Changing out a multipin connector is doable but also may not be necessary. Let me explain. They make ‘connector cleaners’ that are like a little mini file or brush to clean both the male and female sides of a connector. They come in all different sizes so need to determine what would work best...

    Serpentine Belt

I carry a spare belt as well along with the needed tools to replace in the water. One of those tools are bung plugs to fit into the raw water pump hoses that need to come off to put on a new belt. The intake hose is below the water line and thus will flood the boat if not plugged up. I have...

    2011 bayliner flight series

Is this a new to you boat that you are trying to get going? If yes, there are a ton of other items to address as well. Post if that is the case and are interested. For the starter. Given you are hearing the starter motor spin, it’s likely the Bendix has failed. For the starter to get power the...
