    Mercruiser 5.0mpi w/yamaha outdrive

For some reason I thought that the hull and engine were the original and '08, and they put a yamaha on it. So it depends on how they cobbled it together. You'll need at least the full merc driveline (drive, transom plate, gimbel housing), exhaust manis/elbows/y-pipe. Flywheel/coupler? IDK if the...

    Mercruiser 5.0mpi w/yamaha outdrive

Are you sure about what you have? Only a psychopath would put a yamaha drive to replace a (probably) bravo mercruiser. Pretty sure that that entails at the very least new transom plates, full exhaust.

    Flotation foam

You're looking at the fiberglass, you can't tell the condition of the stringers. Need to drill into the stringer in a few places, esp at the bottom. And actually, not sure what's in that pic... Looks like the top of the stringer with no fiberglass but a bunch of rot?

    Voltmeter vs alt output

10v and you wouldn't be starting or (most likely) running. Like AD said, check voltage at the battery. If it's good you probably have bad connections at the helm

Did you drill into the stringer?

    anti-freeze amount

Wondering if it's actually FWC, confusing term if you're new to boats

    4.3 Mercruiser fuel supply issue

It would be nice to just throw it in for our random nice winter days. I took the skiff out on friday--nice 17 mile cruise, but the water really needs to be flat this time of year. A little spray is all fun and games when the water temp is 80', but this time of year, not so much.

    Shift cavity water...

If grease was causing significant damage to rubber components, 90% of the boats on this forum would be underwater.

    1993 Grew Mercruiser 888

They got the rough part right. You have a swimming pool in the ski locker. Your transom and stringers are shot. The engine is the least of your worries. Outside of the motor, you're in it for $5k in materials alone. Unless you are dead broke (in which case you'll be tempted to half ass...

    4.3 Mercruiser fuel supply issue

Yeah, as much as I'm tempted by a newer boat with an ob, a 21' with a 350 carb (or 383, why not) I/o would be tough to pass up from an ease of repair pov

    Shift cavity water...

Didn't think of that. The o ring was still in place, but it will be replaced anyway. I'll pay attention to the bellhousing surface and clean it out. I coat it with grease, doesn't look like it washed it at all (you can see it a bit in the pic).

Verify I have found all drain points

I've removed this a few times and had zero water come out. The cavity in the manifold is large as well with plenty of room for expansion. Fwiw merc doesn't mention pulling this plug either.

    Shift cavity water...

Pulled the drive the other day. Had been dealing with a sticky shift shaft cable that had been worsening throughout the summer. Pulled the drive mid-summer and the cable seemed ok, so I pulled the inner, wiped/dry lubed and replaced (the cable is only about 2 years old, but got dunked with the...

    4.3 Vortec Harmonic Balancers...

Either balancer will be fine. I'd take a used auto motor over a marine any day. Marine engines are driven much harder than auto, and that doesn't even count the (usual) open cooling corrosion and generally harder environment/op conditions

    Pumping out oil from dipstick

Best thing I did when I replaced my engine. Changing that filter would be a nightmare on this engine

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Ok at this point I'd check the vacuum again... That bouncing would make me think a valve isn't seating. Confusing at this point... Your compression and leak down look good now

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Yeah, that's why I suspect his numbers are wrong. A 104 psi is leaking a lot from somewhere, right?...shouldn't have normal leakdown numbers. If you can't build good compression, you're by definition not sealing the chamber well.

For those thinking about an engine swap...

What vintage 4.3 did you go with? What's your WOT rpm? You should have at least had to reprop if you kept the old drive.

1986 Mercruiser 470/170hp/3.7L Carb backfire, low vacuum, other weird issues

Did I miss the part where those compression #'s were addressed? 14mm is still poor vacuum. I can't tell if my video is laggy or if that's the motor, but it looks like your vacuum is low, fluctuating, AND having a sharp drop (HG, rings, burnt/sticky valves?). And your leakdown test numbers are...
