Want to verify that I have the right prop (Mercruiser MC-1)

Ok, will test. But just some additional info: Judging by what is stamped on my two props, I think my old one was a 21p and my current one (on the 120/140hp drive) is a 17p. So... my guess is that I'll have to reprop. Is it worth just switching them out before I test, because I'll be more...

Want to verify that I have the right prop (Mercruiser MC-1)

@Scott06 thanks. I don't do anything fancy, my entire goal is just get from point A to point B for fishing. I'm not sure I've ever even gone full throttle as long as I've owned this boat, so I mostly just want to prop for engine reliability and longevity. I'll probably reprop 2" and see what...

Want to verify that I have the right prop (Mercruiser MC-1)

@Bondo Motor is a 165hp inline 6. Old drive was a MC-1 with the marking worn off but that worked, so I think it was properly matched. New outdrive is for a 120-140hp so people here let me know that the gear ratio is different. They all suggested that I'd need to increase my pitch and reprop...

Want to verify that I have the right prop (Mercruiser MC-1)

oh, good point, I should definitely be keeping an eye on ending the test early. Thanks!

Want to verify that I have the right prop (Mercruiser MC-1)

Hi all, I have a mercruiser MC-1 (pre-alpha) that had a bad outdrive and got replaced with a similar but slightly different one. The consensus here is that I may need to re-prop, but I'm not sure yet and it seems worthwhile to test. Just to verify: the goal is to go out into the water, and run...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Hi all, The good news is that my axle seems fine. I did not see anything other than minor surface discoloration that is probably rust stains from U bolts and stuff. The bad news is that I went over my trailer and found a few spots of rust. You can probably tell that I replaced my bunk brackets...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

oh interesting, yeah I guess it would make thing higher and force me to back into the water more.... I already have to back up more than I'd like so I guess a drop axle is the way to go. Question: Where are you all finding your axles? I've been looking at eastern marine (as suggested by this...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Ah, got it Ah, got it! Yes, I think the photos are misleading. It definitely looks galvanized, but my plan is to smack it all over with a hammer and listen for any dead spots later today and I'll grab some better photos at that time. Thanks!

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 what makes you say that the trailer is painted? I think it's galvanized, and the consensus is that it was hot dipped. The back section of the frame is open and I can see pretty far inside the frame, and it looks like it's in great shape (no rust that I can see) and appears to be...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@Lou C Thanks for the info! I think I may not fully be understanding what you're saying, though. I guess I can't conceptualize how the top of the axle would get any closer to the frame by switching from a drop axle to a straight axle. My intuition is that the only thing that would change is...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Just a side question: if I do end up replacing my axle, do I need to get the exact same style? I mentioned earlier that I had a drop axle, where the spindle was not exactly inline with the rest of the axle (like, the axle sits low, and then the spindle sits a few inches above, attached by a...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@Lou C yeah... I guess saying it has "brakes" was a bit of an overstatement. It has brake drums that are pretty incredibly rusted out, but they're not hooked up to anything, so I have no idea whether they were hydro or electric at one point!

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 Yes, the trailer has 4 pins right now, but it also has brakes, and no surge coupler, so... I'm not sure what's going on there, ha. I'm mostly trying to figure out the cheapest way to get brakes on there—I really do drive 90 seconds to the ramp and nowhere else. Happy to run wiring or...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

oh, alternatively... is there a good marketplace for user trailers? I don't know of any, and craigslist is not being particularly useful... not a lot of trailers for 22 footers if you're not in Florida, apparently :)

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

I see, thank you all. I don't have a surge coupler but guess I'll put one on since I only have a 4 pin. I think my plan for now is to rebuild the axles (if necessary), leaf springs, hubs, etc. and just make sure my hubs are brake hubs. And then keep my eyes open for a used surge coupler in the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

oh.... yeah I guess I need brakes. Two questions: One, my boat is stored—literally—about a block from the launch ramp. I'm kind of guessing because there aren't city blocks in the park, but it's about a 90 second drive with a 10mph speed limit. Still worth it to get brakes? And then two: If...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Thanks—another question. If I end up using my existing axle, at the moment, I have (very rusted) brake hubs on there. What are the considerations when buying new hubs? Do I need to buy brake hubs, or can I just buy a simple hub? If I need brake hubs, is it just a matter of buying any brake...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

great, thanks @dingbat! I think I'll hammer test the frame and axle and assuming everything sounds good, just replace the hubs and springs (and just use my existing axle and frame). Just to make sure this doesn't get buried... I'm having a bit of a tough time finding a replacement axle. My...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@dingbat thanks. Just to make sure I'm understanding, hot dipped means that it's probably pretty rust resistant, correct? So you're saying that if I tap on it pretty thoroughly and it sounds like metal, it's probably in good shape? What will it sound like if it's no good, will it just sound...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 that makes sense! Is there any way to find out whether it was hot dipped and/or how much rust is on the inside? This boat is a 22-footer, so used trailers are few and far between, and new trailers are thousands of dollars. If my trailer body is in decent shape, and I can replace the...
