Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 I don't have any kind of serial number, unfortunately... trailer did not come with any kind of paperwork or anything. But on the trailer, it's galvanized and the trailer BODY looks pretty good. There's a little bit of surface rust but it seems like the body is in good shape. The...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Found an empty plate on the inside of a crossbar... looks like it's a Calkins trailer? Also took some measurements of the axles & etc. My understanding is that if I buy a new axle and leaf springs, and the axle has the hub and everything on it, I can just bolt in the leaf springs, bolt the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@Chris1956 Thanks. I have no idea what brand it is, I can't find a plate or vin or anything on it. Is there some place where this information would typically be, or some hidden place where manufacturers are required to stamp info as a backup or something? Thanks!

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

ah, so... turns out I was very wrong about the leaf springs. They're there, just VERY rusted to the point that I couldn't see them without a flashlight. so those will get replaced. At this point, my strategy is to jack the trailer up and take off one wheel, pull the hubs/etc and get everything...

1966 Islander - Anyone had success installing a porta potty or other toilet solution in the bow/cabin area?

Just a high-level question: I've heard really good things about porta potties that use that biodegrading liquid stuff in the tank. I can imagine that it's pretty awful to clean out just a straight tank of whatever gets flushed, but if there's some liquid and chemicals that are designed to break...

1966 Islander - Anyone had success installing a porta potty or other toilet solution in the bow/cabin area?

@tpenfield yep, that's exactly what I was describing. Was your under the very bow cushion, or under one of the longer port/starboard cushions? If it was under the very bow cushion, what porta potty was it that fit under there? Thanks all!

1966 Islander - Anyone had success installing a porta potty or other toilet solution in the bow/cabin area?

Hi all, I have an older ('66) islander 22 and I'm looking to add a small emergency toilet on board. Plan B is to just get a porta potty and keep it on board somewhere, and that's totally a fine way to go. But I'm also realizing that I have a really nice, mostly empty storage area up in the...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

@JimS123 ok, I think I see your point. If I'm understanding correctly, you are suggesting that I just pull the hubs off the existing axle and install new hubs? That's totally fair, I'm not sure why I didn't think of that. So then, I'll ask my same question but about hubs: What considerations...

Replacing trailer axle... what are the considerations?

Hello all, I think it's time for me to replace my trailer axles. My bearings/hubs are pretty rusted and now that both my tires have gone flat, this might be the motivation I need to replace the whole axle assembly. Just to make sure I'm doing things right... what are the considerations that I...

Mercruiser MC-1 Hydraulic Ram Hose Leaking

@alldodge you were right, no idea how I didn't notice this before. Thanks! @jhamblett really appreciate the photo, that helped a ton. Thanks both! EDIT: One more question. When replacing the hose, are all alpha hoses basically the same or do I need some specific prealpha hose? Thanks!

Mercruiser MC-1 Hydraulic Ram Hose Leaking

Hello, I have a pretty major leak on my pre-alpha (MC-1) tilt ram hose. Ram works fine, but I'm concerned about this hose. Normally I'd just replace the hose, but I can't quite figure out how the hose attaches to the ram. One of the hoses just screws in like normal, but the other one looks like...

Received a Ray Jefferson 5000M Marine Radio, but don't know how to use it?

Thanks, all! @dwco5051 That VHF basics article was exactly what I was looking for. @dingbat yes, it looks and feels old :) It seems to spin through ~85 (give or take, I forget exactly how many) channels, but seeing as how I'm wanting it for safety reasons, I'm concerned that it doesn't have a...

Received a Ray Jefferson 5000M Marine Radio, but don't know how to use it?

Hello all, I recently received a Ray Jefferson 5000M Marine Radio. I have never had a radio in the past (I'm mostly in a lake or a small bay), but I feel like it would be really good to have and know how to use. I got it hooked up to my battery and it turns on and everything, but I just don't...

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

ok, I see, thanks. Any downside to testing with the prop I have now (just like 30 seconds at WOT) to see where I'm at? Or is even 30 seconds at WOT damaging? It would be ~5 min at slow speed to get out of the harbor, then ~1 min at medium speed to get out a bit, and then 30 seconds at WOT...

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

Thanks for all the info! Just a quick beginner question. When you say that shifting issues are almost never due to a drive problem, what are they due to? I kind of thought that the shifting on these was pretty simple... you have a cable that goes from your shifter, to a linkage at the engine...

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

thanks. So just a few absolute basic questions here: 1) just confirming, this is true if I'm switching out the whole outdrive, right? Not just the lower unit as my post erroneously stated? 2) what does the 1.65 and 1.98 mean? Not sure what those numbers refer to. Old is 1.65... what? Is...

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

Not 100% sure, something is up with the shifting. Figured I'd buy another so I can still boat around while I'm digging into this one... I'll likely rebuild the whole outdrive. Important note: I have no idea why I typed "lower unit," I think I was looking at lower units while I was typing and...

switching out lower unit on Mercruiser MC-1 - what to look for?

Hello, I have an old but decent MC-1 on a GM inline 6 / 165hp. Swapping out the lower unit and a friend has an MC-1 lower unit in good shape. Problem is, it say on there it's for 120/140 mercruisers. What's the difference between the lower unit on a 120/140 and a 165? Could I use this lower...
