Getting heavy scale off of the outdrive

I hope it's just surface crud and not aluminum corrosion. I once noticed a couple of tiny spots on my spotless drive were starting to corrode. Then I noticed the bonding wire had fell off the drive side. I fixed the bonding wire and it stopped. I used a little touch up paint to fix the tiny spots.

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

For me, I would only use OEM for critical parts. Cooling is high up on that list of critical.

Instrument cluster poorly illuminated; tachometer doesn't work...

As far as brightening your illumination, you could have some bulbs that are burned out or the bulbs might be getting weak with age. Keep in mind, you don't want them too bright where they blind you at night. Plus, color matters at night too. I forget which is best for night vision. I...

    Opinions on winter storage?

When I had my 16 foot Alumacraft jon boat, I kept it outside. I had those flat bars (some metal, some fiberglass) that bowed way up which well supported the factory cover, even with the Pennsylvania winters. I did add one more at the stern. There are rectangular sockets they fit into and you can...

    Bayliner

What's a 280? Anyway, i think his question was if this particular boat style was intended to be used offshore. I will however agree the condition of this very old boat is a fact that needs consideration.

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

So, is this metal gasket kit a real thing or some aftermarket junk? If anything, this conversation hopefully will clear that up. I'd like to know for the next time I do this.

Trouble with a used bayliner discovery 192

Exactly why you should replace anything critical since you dont know the history of the boat. Those could be the original bellows. You just don't know.....as you stated.... If the starter had to be replaced because it was under water, that's a very bad thing. You have no clue how long the...

Trouble with a used bayliner discovery 192

You say it collects more water while just sitting and less when under way. Long shot... This reminds me of how on some small boats you can pull the plug while under way to suck out accumulated water. I have never done that and wouldn't recommend it, but I believe it's a thing. Maybe your leak...

    Antifreeze circulation through engine

Good points. I remember replacing the o-rings on one set. Later I bought a new set and wondered why I bothered replacing those o-rings! I keep my old ones in the boat tool box.

    Gear Lube Hose

They should all be brass. Who would of thought they would make such a vital and inaccessible part out of plastic? I had no idea when I did my first bellows job. I gave the hose a little slice, but it was still stuck so I pulled on it, maybe tried twisting it a bit and the barb easily broke...

Trouble with a used bayliner discovery 192

My opinion for what it's worth... All three bellows should have been changed while doing the gimbal bearing on a boat that was new to you. I would even change the lower shift cable. I did all of this on mine. I now have a benchmark of when all of that was done. It helps me sleep better!

    Gear Lube Hose

If you want to get an idea of what's what.... Stick your phone back there and take some pictures. Is there a quick connect fitting on the end of the dangling hose? If not, the hose either broke off or somehow fell off and the quick connect fitting is still attached to the bulkhead fitting.

I hope you are right. The prices of nearly everything are ridiculous.

Mercury Inboard taking on water and splashing on engine

Give more details and/or post up some pictures. A serial number off the engine is the best identification means. Boats are not like cars. The year and engine size mean almost nothing. The boat itself usually means nothing. There were too many different engines and brand engines used. Even...

Rain water came in through cover

Sorry to hear that. Even the best cover will leak through if there's any pooling going on. Your goal is preventing any pooling. As I stated previously, I double cover it. My stock mooring covers and the three poles are what supports my top cover. My top cover is made by Classic Accessories...

Hunting Turkey w/o a license cost over $800

Glad you didn't hit something bigger, like a deer. I did that once with an Explorer and I was only going 45 MPH. Fenders, hood, grill, radiator. It wasn't totaled, the insurance fixed it. They certainly dont want us doing our own repairs. It's a major job to change a headlamp in some...

    Wood cost

This upward price trend might go down a little, but don't count on it. Most prices never go back down. A cheap 2x4 used to be $3.15, now they are over $7, and that's the cheapo stuff, a step above balsa wood. If "you know who" gets his way with increasing business taxes, we will be the ones...
