    Clamping ring VP 280

If the bolt was turning easy and did not “bottom out” before it broke you could try a left hand drill bit with a guide to keep the bit centered it will back out. Otherwise if you cannot get it out the other 5 should hold things together.

    Clamping ring VP 280

Did the bolt break off flush with the adapter housing? If not there may be enough left to remove it with some vice grips with the ring removed or weld a nut to what is left on the broken piece.

SX outdrive stuck or was now broke :(

No way that the retainer is bound up in the pivot housing. As far as the bearing retainer that may be all you will need to repair the drive along with the seals. I have had the fun of the drive shaft corroded in the coupler a few times when I had my shop. A real PITA. We used a cutting...

SX outdrive stuck or was now broke :(

The only way to separate the shaft from the engine is either a cutting torch or an abrasive saw blade on a reciprocating power saw. Go ahead and try removing the gear as the previous post first. You might luck out.

SX outdrive stuck or was now broke :(

It appears that the drive shaft is corroded into the drive coupler. The only way the shaft can be removed is to cut the shaft behind the drive coupler then the engine can be removed to replace the coupler and of course the drive needs to be repaired.

New used boat getting the water flowing

If you can get a tool like a scribe that is bent at a 90* angle scrape out the receiver groove for the “O” ring. That should hold the thermostat in place if you have the correct “O”ring. I do not think silicone will be any help. OMC stringer water pumps outlast Mercruiser drive pumps, If the...

New used boat getting the water flowing

Just like SD said you must have a thermostat. Without it you are getting a false reading, the rear of the engine is much warmer than the front and also you will start seeing white froth in the valve covers because the front of the engine is too cold. The lake here in New Orleans gets up to low...

Mercruiser 170 Pertronix Ignitor no spark

Like SD said about the gray wire, you could try disconnecting the gray tachometer wire at the coil where there is just one wire connecting from the coil to the distributor.

2006 Chaparral with Carbureted 5.0 Mercruiser having alarm and limited power.

Try the 6 gallon outboard tank test which will either point out or rule out the fuel supply from the tank. Quite often there is a restriction in the tank suction tube or even a fuel hose that has collapsed internally as well as the anti siphon valve.

    not shifting into forward gear

This is a long shot but the drive you are currently using may still have the original steel shaft with the splines worn/rusted away. I know the stainless ones started showing up in the mid 70s but you have to check. Is the bell crank tight on the bell housing shaft, sometimes the rivet that...

    not shifting into forward gear

If your shift cable outer jacket is not broken and the cable moves freely the problem may be in the drive where the shift slider moves to the rear of the case. Sometimes there is a build up of marine grime in there that stops the slider from going far enough. Remove the drive and check this out.

    Starter bolts Merc 260

Those starter bolts are special made as you can see and are grade 8. With the extended hex head you should have no problem with a socket. I can feel your pain about the clearance problem, there may be a 5/16” bolt and nut that is used to bolt the dust shield to the adapter/flywheel housing...

    Starter bolts Merc 260

Go to a Cheverolet dealer and buy new bolts. You can also get them through a Mercruiser dealer. The replacement bolts may also have an extended 9/16” hex which really helps. Too bad you had the original starter rebuilt when you could have gotten the newer, lighter PMGR style.

    1995 Omc 302 replacement to 351 help

I have a friend who rebuilds the high horsepower engines for the Poker Run crowd. He also balances these engines, he said that whatever engine you get be sure that it comes with the original harmonic balancer and flywheel.

    Trouble starting when warm

I have to agree with Bondo about the Quadrajets, they do have a reputation for that but they are easy to seal up. If you try to use a Edelbrock you will need an adapter plate that sometimes raises the carburetor where the flame arrestor may come in contact with the engine cover.

    Trouble starting when warm

There probably is nothing wrong with the Quadrajet, they are much better than the Edelbrock. Heat soak will be just as bad with the Edelbrock. There is one thing that you can try, sometimes the by-pass circuit on the starter solenoid is not supplying 12volts while cranking and for some reason...

    1995 Omc 302 replacement to 351 help

There are some different weighted flywheels depending on wether the rear main is a full circle 1 piece seal or the earlier 2 piece. It appears that from 81 on Ford made the block with a full circle 1 piece seal. Try to find a 351 from a truck that has a manual transmission and from 96 on they...

    1995 Omc 302 replacement to 351 help

The mounting points to the stringers are the same as well as the rear bolt pattern. Be sure to use a dual plane intake manifold and a real marine carburetor. Summit has both Holley and Edelbrock. The 351 has a larger oil pump drive rod than the 302 is why you need another distributor. If your...

    1995 Omc 302 replacement to 351 help

If your current engine is fuel injected you will be a lot better off going back to a marine Holley carburetor and a standard marine distributor. You should be able to re connect the exhaust. I am not sure about the flywheel balance, the drive coupler should be no problem as well as the mounts...
