    facebook and all the misinformation

I've gone to Youtube for help and found it. But you need to have some subject knowledge so you can sift out the junk. Most recent was applying knock down drywall texture. "The Kilted Guy" was a little weird, but his process was solid. Also home appliance repair vids aren't bad. Often there is a...

    My winter cover solution

Ventilation is important, especially if you store outdoors. I made a pair of PVC "J" pipes. These hung over the gunnels in the rear with the short leg inside the boat and the long leg reaching below the cover.

Re-post of Boomyal's Brined Turkey Recipe!

I keep the bird in the marinade in the fridge until I put it into the roast pan. I time thawing the bird so it soaks just the right number of days before roasting.

    Darn Mice Can Be Expensive

I've never had a problem with mice in my boats in winter layover. I started by laying trays of mothballs, now dryer sheets. I don't know if these did any good, but once I figure where to place dryer sheets in the Ranger, I'll do it. Thinking back I saw this coming. I keep my tools in the truck...

    Darn Mice Can Be Expensive

Summer '21 I noticed an unusual rumble from the truck's blower motor when I turned the A/C to max. Not normal, but I was too busy to see the dealer's shop. Warranty good for another year. Mid summer this year the MIL lamp went on. Code was a generic EVAP issue. So I took it to the dealer...

    Wing Dam Carnage

The bullet nose had a dent that leaked the lube. ...prop shaft was bent. A few years after this I hit a large submerged log in deep water. Another bent prop shaft. So now I mostly use aluminum props. They tend to sacrifice themselves and keep the prop shaft straight.

    Wing Dam Carnage

Heading to the metal buyer today. These have been sitting under my workbench since 2008. We boat on the upper Mississippi river with its many wing dams. This one prop eater extends to the channel with a 30' gap close to the bank. The gap is on a shortcut, but this day I was disoriented in the...

Re-post of Boomyal's Brined Turkey Recipe!

I've 'brined' poultry and pork for years using a rub: Per pound, 1 tablespoon Morton Tender Quick, 1/2 tsp Accent or MSG, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/4 tsp ground cayenne or chipotle pepper. 1/4 tsp pulverized rosemary for poultry, sage for pork. Rub the poultry inside and out. Place in large...

Data keeps you from acting stupid.

    Yea, I know. Tomorrow.

Data keeps you from acting stupid.

Earlier this year I bought a new water softener for our river house. 32000 grain, Fleck mechanical meter valve. I assumed (as in AssofYouandMe) that the well water was around 19 grain/gallon hardness. I couldn't get more than 600-700 gallons of water @ 10# of salt/regeneration before it was...

    change steering shaft

Yes. I was intimidated by the thought of an engine pull. But I had to do it to replace broken front mount studs. The worst was bolstering the garage trusses so I could hang a come along chain hoist. The actual pull/replace was easy. I used the set up to help my pal pull his 350 Mag to replace...

    change steering shaft

I think it's possible, but it would be the mother of all "build a ship in a bottle" exercises. Merc makes a kit to access the clamp nut and bolt on the steering/tiller arm. It comes with a drilling template, pipe tap and two large pipe plugs IIRC. The intent is to access this hardware through...

    Old I/Os = Money Pits?

Truth. I bought our second new I/O recently. I looked at O/B versions of each candidate, but I went with another I/O because of higher power availability, lower price and full swim platform access. A properly maintained and sanely operated I/O engine and drive will last a long time. ...longer...

    Old I/Os = Money Pits?

I agree with all above. I've been in I/Os since 1975, and they were all new. The first two were owned by my wife's family, and died, or are dying from neglect. ...to many users, not enough maintainers. I sold my first owned I/O after 25 yrs. I fussed over it like one of my children, so the...

    Battery discharge. ...normal?

I'm not discharging the battery intentionally, just trying to estimate the amount of the draw and sources of the excess load. That's why I'm using total capacity in that estimate. I'll have actual meter measurements in the spring by disconnecting devices. Assuming linear discharge rate my...

Is something wrong with the jack on my trailer?

I wish I had your problem. I have to place a wood block or concrete paver under my trailer wheel to keep it from peening the asphalt or sinking into the gravel or sod. I orient the wheel for when the trailer sets into the tire chocks and moves a bit to keep it on the block. Dang thing has a mind...

    Battery discharge. ...normal?

Am I missing something when I say the battery has additional reserve below 10.5V? That remaining 10.5V is feeding the 'always on' circuits until it depletes to a dead battery.

    Pre-mix ratio question

I was queuing up the same reply. Run a vehicle's tank low. Bring the premix to the gas station and dump it into the tank. Top off from the pump. No one will notice except the old 2 stroke motorcycle owners, and they'll just get nostalgic.

    Battery discharge. ...normal?

Oops, my bad. Battery is a Continental Grp 21 1000 Marine/RV ....not 1000CCA. 800CCA, 140RC. The battery is dead w/in 14 days, well past 10.5 V. The VP instruments don't even wake up and beep. So using my logic of total amp capacity of 800/(14x24)=2.4A constant draw. Not as large as I'd...

No. Seems I'm down to the radio and bilge system.
