Early 80’s thunderbolts - same wiring woes as mid 70’s models?

I’m considering taking a 1981 80hp thunderbolt in on trade. Do these motors suffer the same wire deterioration issues as the earlier thunderbolt models? I don’t see many of these around in theses parts. Any other inherit issues? (Fresh water use)

    70's Mercury thunderbolt wiring upgrades?

So I'm debating on trying to keep my 1976 Merc 650 going for a few more years. I replaced the lower unit and water pump last year and it ran great by the end of the season. It's got 130psi on all three cyls. My mechanic told me it is on borrowed time due to the wiring issues that plague these...

Minimum horsepower size for Starcraft SS160?

I'm still looking for a newer motor for my '76 SS160. I've found a 60 hp OMC with power trim (big plus feature as my back is not strong). I have my heart set on a 70, but I'm currently running a 70's Merc 650, so I cant see there being a tremendous difference, can you? i was getting 30-31mph...

    Motor mount bolting pattern compatibility?

I’m planning both a transom rebuild AND a re-power. Im concerned with remounting my original motor (Merc 650), followed shortly with a swap to a 70hp OMC. Both are mid 70’s. Does anyone know if Merc and OMC have a similar mounting pattern? Or will I have to seal and fill and re-drill new...

Supplying model number and serial number to potential buyers? Would you?

So there was an outboard motor this week that I was considering acquiring. It was on the Canadian version of craigslist In corresponding with the seller, it came to light that his “friends uncle gave him the motor” and didn’t know much about it. Because I’m 1.5 hours away, I wanted to run the...

Nissan 8 hp outboard’s? Good bad and ugly?

Hey folks, I’m thinking about going to look at an 8 hp Nissan as a kicker motor for my 16 foot aluminum Starcraft. The motor is an hour and a half away for me so I’d like to find out what’s good what’s bad and what’s ugly about these motors if anything. I think it’s a 1980s to early 90s model...

1969 18 hp Evinrude lock up issues

I’ve got a 1969 Evinrude 18 horse that I acquired in a non-running condition. It was locked up and after soaking all winter long with PB blaster, I’m able to free it up by tapping directly on the piston One cylinder is clean the other one is full of black carbon, wet rust and a few metal shards...

    90hp V4 on an SS160?

I want to re-power my 16’ super sport. I think the hull is rated for 85 horsepower, So I’m assuming that five horsepower over that is it really anything to fret over. what I am concerned with is overall weight of this motor combined with a 9.9 kicker beside it. (not to mention the starting...

What year did the propeller horse power ratings come into effect?

Hey folks, just wondering what year Johnson and Evinrude started rating their horsepower at the prop instead of the crankshaft? I’ve heard that it’s a difference of about 15hp in the 70 hp range. I.e.; early 70 hp models = 55 at prop vs 70 at prop for newer. Or or is there any truth to this...

Larger 2 stroke outboard and trolling question

I’ve heard that older, larger 2 stroke OB’s don’t like running at trolling speeds for periods of time. My ‘76 650 merc is one of them, however last fall we trolled for staging salmon with it on Lake Huron and it never ran better. In 70deg water and summer weather, it acts up within 15 minutes...

Thinking of buying a non running Johnson 70

Hey all, I’m considering picking up a non running 1984 70hp Johnson. I’m assuming the year based on its hood or cover but I believe these hoods are interchangeable through the years(?) in any case, I’m hoping for advice. This motor has prop damage and a sheared off skeg so I know I’m welding...

Inboard vs I/O Starcraft Super Sports?

In my area,16' SS's seem to be most prevalent and command the highest dollar. 18' OB SS's are super scarce and most 18's are I/o's. In recent years, I've seen really nice 18's with IO's sit advertised on Kijiji for several seasons at half the cost of 16' OB's which come and go somewhat quickly...

Starcraft SS160 - built-in fuel tank or stay portable?

I was at the sportsman show today looking at boats. Love all the new features of modern boats. I also recently saw somebody selling an SS 160 that was done up beautifully. The seller had mounted a fuel tank in the bow. With filling station on the top side of the bow, complete with vent. So...

    Chocolate milk spooge from exhaust?

I just noticed a bunch of chocolate milk looking spooge coming from the exhaust of my 1976 650 Merc. Last time I was out, we trolled through about 20L of fuel. I never opened it up to top speed. Could this be from loading or not running up to temperature? I checked the lower unit oil and it is...
