Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Excellent thank you. I’ve had this boat on the Great Lakes in the past. And while I don’t plan on taking it out in big waves and swells, I certainly don’t want to be caught in or stranded running from a sudden violent storm and have a spray rail split happen at the worst time.

Beautiful resto. Can I ask why the spray rail brace AND the outer chine brace? what size rivets did you use? 5/32” or 3/16” rivets? What alloy? .080” think 5052 sheet?

Agreed, I don’t. I used it hard until it snowed last year and then had to finish a home Reno over the winter. This boat has to stay in So I’m back at it until this season hits. I hope I can get a big chunk of it done. Thanks for the link

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Hey guys, this is a little bit of a cross post. I asked a question about these braces in my rebuild thread but that’s a pretty sleepy long time thread that I’m afraid doesn’t get a whole lot of visits. So sorry about the cross post but I need to know; is there a tutorial on adding chine braces...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Spring is here and boat is thawed. Time to put my floors in. Before I do, I want to add the aluminum rib end brackets. Does anyone remember who’s thread it was where they attached to the rib itself instead to the bottom of the hull? I like the idea of less rivets below the waterline. any...

Temporarily disconnecting VRO - will it damage oil pump?

Ok good to know. I went digging trying to understand the apparently commonly misunderstood system. I found this in depth article for anyone interested: https://www.performanceoutdoors.net/threads/vro-oil-pump-information.9050/ I was thinking of keeping this motor as a backup but I’m going to...

Temporarily disconnecting VRO - will it damage oil pump?

Yeah, more like 8-9 months of storage. Only hardcore people have them in the water early/late. Most cottagers put in may 24 weekend to labour day. Some keep in to Canadian thanksgiving (Oct) after that we start preparing for igloo building. me, I’m April to November if I can

Temporarily disconnecting VRO - will it damage oil pump?

Thanks. I can’t afford a 4 stroke or I’d have one. I want to clean up my act. 15k Canadian to switch over :( I didn’t think I’d be able to run it on premixed at the same time figuring it would effectively be running at 25:1

Temporarily disconnecting VRO - will it damage oil pump?

I bought a 1986 Johnson 60 with VRO intact. I’m going to clean/rebuild carbs and run it on premix (it’s what I use in my other boat and all I currently have in my fuel tanks) I haven’t decided whether to bypass permanently, so wondering if disconnecting VRO to test run will damage the oil...

Lower unit bearings, water intrusion question

Not full drain, just did the quick check. (Open screw, let some out, close up) I’ll do a full drain when I pull the boat out

Charging kit for 1990 8hp Evinrude?

My kit is on order, any idea if it will work on the earlier 7.5 Johnson’s? My Brother has one and he’d like one also if it will. Early 80’s I think

Lower unit bearings, water intrusion question

I realize I ask a lot of questions and while I and my username come across as cheap, I’d actually like to be seen as “cost conscious”. I’m trying to gauge what I’m in for cost wise to do a full rebuild, should it be necessary. So if I’m potentially $400 inparts plus hours of my time VS $300...

Lower unit bearings, water intrusion question

Thanks. By standard bearings, do you mean “local industrial bearing supply house” standard?
