    1950s Alumacraft boat

I guess I would have been over the limit. I was looking for a OMC 50 looper to go on it....I guess I would have had stellar performance...course I did want it to get up and go when I had to outrun a storm......fishing open water in a small boat.

    Shocks

I'll add this. When Merc decided to add power trim to their engines, those mounting points for the shocks came in mighty handy. I had an 850 with PTT and the hydraulic cylinders replaced the shocks, perfect fit. I bought it new back in the mid 70's as I recall. One of the finest engines I...

    Oil delete

My 90 oil pump was gear driven off the crankshaft. I removed the fuel pump for access, removed the gear/shaft in the pump and reinstalled the pump. Did nothing else but add a pint of TC-W3 oil to 6 gallons of gas when refueling. I changed nothing else. Surely there are other ways of doing it.

    03 mercury 50hp 2stroke loss thrust

The Forward gear operation is like a saw blade....vertical in one direction and sloped in the other. The vertical portion is used when the engine is driving the prop. The sloped is an "overrun clutch" and is used when the water is driving the prop.....decelerating. In Reverse the gears are...

100hp mariner starts but doesn’t keep running

Remove your main engine fuel filter and cut it open....getting a replacement of course before you do that.....what's inside and how much? If black specks its fuel line degradation and you need to replace your engine's fuel lines and do a kit on the fuel pump while you are at it. Then do the...

Newer era Mercury 4 stroke cooling temperatures

I had another thought last night. It may be to reduce the accumulation of engine cooling chamber deposits especially from salt water. I live in a high alkaline environment. Great for showering but tea pot accumulates lots of mineral deposits.

Newer era Mercury 4 stroke cooling temperatures

No I don't but what difference does the temperature make if the engine tolerances are designed for thermal expansion at the higher temperatures?

New to me Lazer II with 3 square PVS vent holes

Well I read it and I never saw a prop with only one hole and I half a dozen years ago I was scrounging around marine dealer used props when I found my Laser II.....so much for suppositions on my part!

    1950s Alumacraft boat

I forget the model name but 50 hp was a good match for that boat. I was looking to buy one in that time frame and couldn't find a used one around here. I had a 12 and 14' and wanted a larger boat. One of my buddies ran a 33 HP Johnson on his 14' with a side console....nice match.

Newer era Mercury 4 stroke cooling temperatures

I wonder that too since non-marine applications of 4 strokers run around 200F in today's more efficient engines. My 2011 Silverado sits rock solid on 210 and has since new. It has electric fans behind the radiator and they will maintain that temp regardless of what I'm doing. Other things...

Short shaft kicker for 20 inch transom

They make brackets that attach to the transom and can be set to different positions. I don't know how far down they go but they are designed to get your lower unit out of the water when raised. Agreeing with Sea Rider, you need "new water" into a prop's slip stream for the prop to pull...

    15hp Evinrude acceleration issues

You didn't give us any history upon which to make decisions in an answer. On a bare propshaft, the "thrust" washer, usually tapered (ID) to have an "interference" fit on the prop shaft goes on first, then the prop then a locking device washer, then a locking device, then the nut. If you want...

New to me Lazer II with 3 square PVS vent holes

Ask him to clarify his position. My guess is that he is speaking in general but I can't speak for him. Besides, if you are doing something for a reason, why only do 1/3 of the job.

New to me Lazer II with 3 square PVS vent holes

I have one of those props. The purpose of the holes is to force exhaust gasses into the "new water" into which the prop rotates, decreasing the density. A less dense input allows the engine to accelerate faster. Since HP is torque and RPM dependent, the faster you get your RPMs up the faster...

    2015 115 Merc on 20' pontoon

If the top of your RPM band is 6000 which I think it is on 4 strokers, you are getting about all you can get out of the engine. On turning to one side or the other, get behind the engine and look down at the lower section just above the prop. I never saw a 4 stroke lower unit but I suppose...

1985 Mercury 85hp (4 cyl) runs great for 20 minutes then boggs down

I had this problem with a 2002 90 HP 2 stroke at 10 years of age running E10 whether that matters or not I now have a 115 of the same year run on gasoline and the Q tip wipe produces zero specks. The problem was in fact a black speck of deterioriated fuel line located in the cavity where the...

    Trust the dealer?

Jim, its apples and oranges if you are talking about today's 25 and the rude in your avatar. Back when I was a kid, that engine would run a 16' plywood skiff with windshield and side mounted controls, 2 fishermen, 2 ea. 6 gallon tanks of gas, a livewell full of shrimp and tackle, fast enough to...
