    68 Offshore restoration

Attempted to install the decks. They all fit in place nicely, but a few rivnuts popped through. I think my drill bit was a little large, didn't have an intermediate size though. So I get to reinstall a few with some epoxy. A couple just weren't well aligned and will get redrilled, and one...

    68 Offshore restoration

Wasn't going to be in town this weekend but the whole family came down with a stomach bug. Rest is the best medicine, so naturally I put down some sugarcane derived antiseptic and got to work with the boat. First I worked on finishing most of my foam cuts. Set up my table saw with the hot...

And fit testing floors. Need to trim some at the back, about 1/8" or so. Going to work on drilling for rivnuts while I'm at it, then shopvac (again!) and install foam. Yes, the back floor is multicolor, ran out of final paint at the end, the canvas soaks up more than I planned. That section...

I added a second plug so I could double the power supply inputs. Not really double, I added a 12v 2a power supply in parallel to the 12v 5a, and it works much better now. Funny enough, the 2a on its own did a better job than the 5a on its own. I think they must use two different current...

    68 Offshore restoration

Built a hot wire cutter for cutting foam. Decided I didn't want to deal with foam crumbs/dust. Plus I will be using expanded polystyrene, so the hot wire will help seal the cut edge. Using stainless fishing leader and a 12v5a supply, it works, but not very quickly. It's very pulsed, like it...

It looks like the dash was jewelled? How badly does it glare in the sun? I'm trying to come up with a nice dash design, one of my thoughts is to do a jewelling job, I'm afraid of the glare in summer sunlight though. Thinking maybe I could minimize it with a few coats of black candy or...

Created some transom trim. It's mostly in place but requires some final 3lb hammer "sculpting". I made the "ear" sections straight, and I'm glad I did because it really makes the look flow with the rest of the modifications. The ears also got flashed on the inside, I dont really want any...

    68 Offshore restoration

Got the back of the splashwell area covered in flashing. Flashing is nailed on, nails will get sealer tomorrow. Drain holes were internally swaged with an 11mm socket. Debating flashing over the part of the "ears" that will be exposed, almost exclusively for aesthetics. Please ignore the...

I'd personally recommend sheet foam, a little more work to install, but should last longer and easier to replace if ever needed. The pour in foam is also closed cell until the smallest damage to the surface, then it becomes a sponge, I've seen weeds growing in it, thriving. I suppose if you...

    68 Offshore restoration

Weekend update. Got the remaining two transom ears in place. Sanded, sawed, and butchered the wood until it was flush with aluminum, and then coated the raw edges with gluvit. Also got angle crossbars installed at the joint location of each deck board, this should stiffen the floor better...

I think they were added early to mid 70s. By 84 I think they should be there from the factory. I'd just worry about fixing any loose rivets and leaky seams. Looking at some of those pictures of your defoaming progress, it looks like you have tabs that run under each rib.

To me, that's called a blank canvas, haha. Build it into what you want. You can get a pretty good idea from pictures.

    68 Offshore restoration

Started some plastic surgery on the splashwell. BFH bending brake made it work, still need to trim, but need some other parts in place first. Also didn't think about needing to move the drain holes, but that's fairly simple. Trimmed the edges of the deck boards, luckily the canvas stayed...

    68 Offshore restoration

I think that's pretty much the conclusion I've come to. I think I could make it fit, the question is what it does to the rest of the structure. I could see it wearing out seams and rivets in short order. I'm going to attempt to rip a half inch or so off the sides and see if the canvas stays...

I'd still recommend a solvent like acetone or xylene. You will only be using a little at a time and be in good ventilation (a fan would be advisable), so I wouldn't worry about the fumes accumulating to an ignitable level. Very likely a different substance, but I've been using acetone on the...

    68 Offshore restoration

Got my side bracing mostly attached. Front pieces are riveted to ribs and chine braces, back pieces are riveted to ribs. Unfortunately because the ribs and side angles are not 90 degrees, I can't get them riveted to the side braces as well. I think I will just add some 1/4" screws to span the...

I need to do it more often! Too much "this will be useful for something later" parts taking up space in my garage.

    68 Offshore restoration

Starting on the angle aluminum that will finish the chine bracing. Got the 2 pieces of 1/8" angle attached to the ribs of the straight portion from stern to where the console end. Got two pieces of old floor crossmembers bent into 1/16"-ish angle for where the chines curve. Used two pieces of...

    68 Offshore restoration

Flipped back right side up. Ground down any patching on the upper transom and decided to install the new transom wood. Definitely did not slide right in. Broke a rubber mallet, so I decided to use a sledge with a chunk of 2x scrap in-between. Still beat up my freshly glued/sealed transom...

I'm no expert at marine fuel tanks, but if it holds pressure, I'd clean it up and use it.
