    Kicker motor vs towing

Gee, one can run 50::1 premix in a 4 stroke motor. Vice versa is very bad however.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Gee, the high beam button on the floor was in my fathers '62 Mercury. By 1980 it was gone. Detroit used to use it for the starter, before they had key start and the solenoids necessary for that.

    Kicker motor vs towing

I have been boating for 50+ years. I always try to keep the engine maintained so it will keep running, but about 5 times, it has failed me. One was a hard aground, so that doesn't count. One was when my wife (in another boat) was to tow me home when I broke down. I was troubleshooting an...

    New Winch or Winch Strap?

Gee, isn't aircraft cable stainless steel? That stuff laughs at salt water, rain and the like, no?

It rained on my fresh, wet paint!

Oil based paint is fairly resistant to rain. Latex, OTOH.... If it is bottom paint, let her dry and maybe touch up a few places where it got wet.

    2005 J115PLSOR weird oil leak

When you tilt up a carb motor, fuel often leaks. The gasoline tends to evaporite, leaving thin oil. Is that the scenario?

How to restore this 1961 hull?

I had a Crestliner of about that age, years ago. The hull was cored with Balsa wood. It was mush in the 70's. If your hull is cored, you need to make sure it is still stiff and useable.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

My '88 Mercruiser had an electric choke. You had to pump the throttle twice to start her. Obviously, marine engines had carbs and points well after autos.

    New Winch or Winch Strap?

Joe, inquiring minds want to know. How do you refasten the winch strap to the eye after you cut it off. Usually, they are sowed. 3 pop rivets comes to mind.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Gee, It just dawned on me that a lot of the younger generation do not have much experience with chokes, carbs and the like. Push button start auto have been around close to 20 years, and fuel injected cars about 45 years. So you need to be 40+ to remember pumping the accelerator pedal in your...

    New Winch or Winch Strap?

Gee, a small trash bag would do it. It would be ugly. Any idiot with a piece of canvass and a sewing machine could make a cover.

question on the starting a "2 cycle Merc" sticky

Choke the crap out of her when she is cold. So to cold start her... Advance the throttle, pump the primer bulb until hard, hold the choke button and crank her until she fires. It should take 30 sec or less for her to fire.

    1988 candia 180 4.3

Is that a MerCruiser? If so, a usual prop would be a 21P. However, sterndrive boats are usually butt heavy, and take some time and power to plane. The real question is what is your max RPM with the motor trimmed? That RPM will tell you what your prop should be. Boats like yours can benefit...

    Creaking/popping power trim

Gee, most outboard motors have a grease fitting for both the swivel bracket and the tilt tube. You might look closer. Some OBs have other zerks for other things. I.E. My '77 Merc had a zerc for the distributor movement in addition to the zerk for the swivel and trim pivots. My '93 Merc has...

    Fuel System Fire

I have a motor like that. It leaked fuel for some time, before I figured it out. It never caught on fire though. It would normally take a fire to ignite fuel. Gas vapors are another subject. It takes just a spark to ignite them.

    Fuel System Fire

The only serious electrical power in the area is from the PTT relays. Maybe a wire was arcing to ground? Another guess!

    Fuel System Fire

The voltage regulator is probably water cooled, on that motor. Maybe it overheated and caught fire inducing a fire near the carbs due to a fuel leak? Obviously, this is a guess.

    Control cables.

To add, the shift cable is the only cable to move forward and backward from the center position, as the throttle handle is moved from neutral to forward and reverse.

40HP Merc or Not the way I'd do it.

Sounds like you are working on the oil injection system. If they have a remote oil reservoir in the boat, then they have a number of check valves, hoses and other stuff to force oil from the boat reservoir to the engine reservoir.

    Bent prop shaft

I have no idea of the complexity of the rebuild. However, what I have found is that if you need to replace three gears and the shaft, it will cost nearly as much as a new aftermarket gearcase.
