97 SeaRay 175 project boat hull weeping question

I measured width every foot right after popping the cap off...probably overkill, though. Mine did splay out just a bit over the course of the rebuild, so every time I glassed in major structure to the hull (stringers, bulkheads, and decking), I used 2-3 ratchet straps to pull the hull back into...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

As far as I know it's the original pump from 1987. I bought a new one at the parts store today, but after getting home and comparing, I'm guessing I need a marine-specific pump. The one I got doesn't have a flared line inlet and doesn't have the vent line nipple. I went ahead and picked up a...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

It's a mechanical pump. Unfortunately I didn't get a look at the gauge when it was dying. Idle screws are barely out as it is. It looks like it's blowing past the needle and just spilling out of the bowl vent and down both the primaries and secondaries.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Welp! Boat is still up to its antics. I got stranded again today and had to get a buddy to tow me in. Ran great on the hose in the driveway, at first startup at the lake, and for the entire 20+ minute ride at 4,000 RPM up the river. Once I pulled back to idle when we got where we wanted...

97 SeaRay 175 project boat hull weeping question

My cap was attached to my hull with clear silicone, and that's what I put it back together with. After removing all the screws, go around and make sure nothing else on the cap is glassed to the hull. I had to cut tabbing between the floor and the rear bench seat (which is part of the cap)...

97 SeaRay 175 project boat hull weeping question

It'll be fine. Nothing below the deck needs to be fully cured, since it will all get filled with foam.

    1995 Luhrs 290 Tournament open Stringer/bulkhead recoreing

Typically the stringer and bulkhead network are all interconnected beneath the fiberglass. Rot in the back equals rot in the front. If not yet, it will in the future.

    Bow damage fix?

I had similar damage. I mixed up some PB to fill the deep gouges, then rolled on a few coats of white gelcoat over that. If you are going to do a keel shield (recommended) you won't have to worry too much about the cosmetics, as the keel shield should cover most of that.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Got my carb rebuilt and the fuel pressure gauge installed. I talked to a guy who knows a lot about QJ's and he told me about an orifice to open up slightly, which I did, and that seems to have drastically improved my nozzle drip. On-the-water testing tomorrow!

What causes this knocking tapping sound?

When the drive is all the way up, the u-joints will turn the shaft, but they're under a less than ideal angle, and they can make noise. Try it again with the drive lowered down and report back with whether the noise is still there or not.

Yep, that's the plan. Good pointing it out for others who may not know, though.

Hole and chip repair help needed

You'll need to fair out the hole, patch with some CSM and resin, sand, fill, then finally, gelcoat. If you just fill the existing hole without fairing, it will likely crack and you'll be dealing with it again in the future. To color match, you'll have to buy different gelcoat tints and play...

    Oil filter socket

I'm a fan of the Lisle filter wrench. Bites onto the filter. Turns with a 3/8" drive ratchet. Haven't yet found a filter that's on so tight this won't get it off...as long as you have the room to get a 3/8" ratchet (or combination of extensions/UJ's) onto it...

    Electronic fuel pump.

Yes, it is normal for the alternator and starter to have 12V at them even with the key off. I'm not sure what engine you're working with, but on my 1987 Mercruiser V8, the starter battery is connected directly to the starter (well...there is a battery shut-off switch between them), and the...

    Upholstery Work?

I paid a shop to do all the upholstery on my 19 ft closed bow runabout. It was $3500 back in 2021. 2 side panels, 2 captains chairs, a bench seat with backrest, and a sun pad.

Mercruiser 5.0LX Rochester 4MV carburetor over fueling. ESN OF066511

Nice! I'm hoping to put mine together this week and see how it runs. Which regulator did you use? I'm adding a gauge for now, and if needed will add a regulator.

Mercruiser 5.0LX Rochester 4MV carburetor over fueling. ESN OF066511

The clip orientation on the needle valve is super important. Some people (including Cliff) say you can ditch the clip altogether. I'd rather have no clip than an improperly oriented clip. If you're buying a rebuild kit from Cliff's (which I do recommend), you should also buy his book. Also...
