    1998 Bayliner Capri floor.

You can use a vacuum with a bag as Scott suggested, or get a cyclone dust separator to add in-line with your vacuum. It's amazing how much dust the cyclone collects and keeps out of the vacuum. Some of the super-fine particles still make it past the cyclone, so I also ran a felt "filter saver"...

Looks great. Mind sharing the stud PN from McMaster? I like the idea of those.

    Tearing down transom assembly

OK, reading in the Mercruiser manual, you cannot go to the new nylon lower pin bushing if you have the old style needle bearing like mine. I've decided to leave the old seal behind the gimbal bearing in place - if I don't need a new one, no harm in leaving the old one there, right? I also...

    Filler Size Applications?

My understanding is that chopped and milled fibers are the same thing. I use 1/4 chopped/milled fiber for strength and fumes silica (aka cabosil) to thicken. Chopped fibers alone will not thicken the resin enough.

    Replacing stringers

Just FYI, being a 1967 I'd almost surely guess the stringers are actually made of wood covered in fiberglass. The work isn't really hard, it's just a lot of work.

    Tearing down transom assembly

Still looking for input on the following: Should I replace or do-away with the seal that resides behind the gimbal bearing? I'm going to replace my lower pin because it's pitted. Should I buy a steel or aluminum pin? On the gimbal ring, there is a needle bearing that the above pin passes...

    Tearing down transom assembly

I've been making progress getting this transom assembly torn down - not all the way there yet, but getting there. It's dirty, but overall the condition seems good. I have the transom repair kit (30-803097T) which includes gimbal bearing, bellhousing gasket, o-rings, water hose, and bellows. I...

First deck replacement, I have questions

Yeah, you're only deceiving yourself if you don't drill holes and inspect the wood shavings that come out. The fiberglass can be thick enough to not poke a screwdriver through, and the wood behind it can be black mush, and you wouldn't know it. Knocking on it tells you absolutely nothing. The...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Yeah, I had already bought the puller tools months ago, so I used them, haha. The special tools I ordered this week are the 12-pt driver to remove the bell housing from the gimbal ring and a deeeeeeeep 9/16" socket to remove the lower shift cable from the bell housing.

1992 Malibu Sunsetter Euro F3 rebuild seeking advice

Chuck - just curious how many flap discs you think you went through? On mine (18.5 ft boat), I went through about 25 discs, but I was buying cheaper discs from Amazon. Looks like the HF discs are about $4.50 each. I was buying 10 packs from Amazon for $16 ($1.60/disc). I felt like they held...

    Stringer Design Question

I agree with Chuck on all fronts - spend the money on REAL pastry bags and don't try to get by with a zip lock bag with the corner cut out. The angle of the pastry bags makes piping much more controllable. Definitely put milled fibers in your PB. I like my PB mixed on the thicker side - your...

First deck replacement, I have questions

The best way I came up with to attach deck to stringers was to make cleats that bolted to the sides of the stringers and screw the deck down into those. The cleats are attached with SS hardware coated in 5200. I resin coated the cleats and also put PB between them and the stringers. I used SS...

    Tearing down transom assembly

Thanks guys. I see sticky threads in the restoration forum, but not this one for some reason. I have signatures turned off because it makes reading the forums easier - less scrolling. I'll turn them on to find the link in your signature.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Hoping to wrap up the tow rig's engine in the next week or so and then get back on the boat. I started tinkering with the gimbal housing this weekend - got the gimbal bearing pulled and got the special tools ordered that I need to continue disassembly. I'm planning on new gimbal bearing...

    Stringer Design Question

Right. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a 1/2" gap...you'll just use a lot more PB. And you'll be surprised how much resin you'll go through bedding in stringers and bulkheads...I know I was.

    Stringer Design Question

I did #1 and just filled the gap along the entire length of the stringer with PB. You could do #2 and use less PB, but it's more work, and you likely wont get the hull contour 100% right on the stringer anyhow. But that's ok...that's what PB is good for. There is zero spacing in my bedding. I...

    Putting in a floor hatch.

Yes, mahogany is great stuff for boats. Put on 1-2 heavy coats of resin along the edge, allowing it to cure between coats. The edges will drink a lot of resin. Next, if there are any voids along the edge, mix up some PB And fill them, then while the PB is wet, wet the edge again with resin then...
