Is my engine mounted low enough?

Interesting mount you have there, not sure I have saw one like that. However that may make the job even easier. Adding a wedge would keep you from drilling more holes, but resealing and getting to the fasteners inside the transom might be a challenge. Rather than moving the wood section down...

How is HP selected on old Elgin Outboards?

Can only recall as a kid, with the cover off I saw 4 big holes and all the adults were talking about a monster size 4 bbl. I knew he complained about all the gas it sucked up.

How is HP selected on old Elgin Outboards?

None that I knew of...I was an avid young boater back then, big motors were 25 hp!! My dad had a 7.5 hp Elgin motor, I was king of the river for a couple years until rhe other kids dads moved up to 10 hp motors !! My uncle bought one of the first 50 hp V4 outboards in the area. That thing was...

    Mercury Big Tiller Hydraulic Steering

Acceptable to use aluminum plate as outboard shim?

Yep...unless replaced in the past few years, that boat needs a new transom !! As a 60 plus year boater, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the nymber of foljs that said " that transom feels solid..no issues there" only to find them selves in serious trouble shortly after. Working at...

Is my engine mounted low enough?

Yep....didn't notice that before....the tilt pin on the motor should be able to allow it to hang verticle after. Any good woodshop can make a nice uniform angled wedge that would look good !

Is my engine mounted low enough?

Unbolt the wood where the motor mounts and lower that a couple inches, just drill new holes in the wood. If you get into some chop you don't want the water intake to keep popping out of the water.

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

As an old boater, I enjoyed the pics of your motor, brought back fond memories, willing to bet some boat pics would do the same if you would care to post some. Afterall who doesn't appreaciate looking a cool old boats, especially when they look to be in good condition as yours appears to be in.

    Nissan or Mercury?

If it us runnung well, why stop using/ replace it ? It could easily run for many years without issue. Find and keep a spare water pump on hand, oil and spark plugs are readily availiable. I have a 1985 kicker motor, never needed anything but a spark plug and an impellor blade in all those...

    Dust Cap Woes

I have had a few over the years pop off, but akways something wrong with the hub or the cap. All I can add is...the caps should be really tight getting in...really tight! When I put mine in, it takes a big hard rubber mallet and a number of harsh, hard swings to get the cap to seat !! When they...

    Broken low speed needle

Find a very small dia left hand drill bit, small enough to fit the large dia end of the broken pin. Once you get the left hand drill to bite in, it will unscrew the broken pin. Gonna be a tiny delicate job but doable....remember left drills go backwards..same direction as unscrewing...

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

I have a 1992 40 hp four cylinder with two carbs, have not had any issues so far, but it idles excellent...nice and slow, can almost hear each cylinder fire. So...the potential is there for a nice slow idle, as mentuoned these inline 4's are great motors !!

    Another winterization question

Years back a neighbor used the light bulb method for his boat, had it in a small unheated barn. He put a light in the window that he and the neighbor could both see. If they looked and no light, they knew the power was out and they would fire up a small power generator to keep the bulbs going...

    Another winterization question

Draining is the safest move bar none !!! With that said...to get a longer season I used to put two 75 or 100 watt light bulbs in those big funnel looking aluminum housings inside the dog house. Temp never dropped below 60 degrees even when outside temp was 25... Experimented to see if one bulb...

    Care to guess tire size?

With the conditions you describe, you have a 95% chance the boat is junk, rotted transom and stringers. Your getting it for free because that is much cheaper than the owner junking it himself. Sure you want that trouble just for a free trailer ??
