I don't think the heavy stuff is gonna come for quite a while...

Yikes, we're only mid-tide. I don't think I can handle having my boat take another dunk. A little duct tape and she'll be fine One of many newly ventilated piers:

Next high tide 8p, might get a little sporty.

89 Horizon 180 with stock 4.3 upgrade questions

On behalf of everyone trying to give you good advice...I apologize. Flywheel and/or coupler may be different, rear mounts may be different, front mounts will be different...I'm sure you'll find more problems as you get into your "cheap" project. If it's me, I pull a wrecker 350 for that same $200.

Should be a common take off point for the purple somewhere, not sure where on the TKS. You'll have to trace the alt purple back...

    2003 Mercruiser 4.3 TB-V No Spark

This is a 3 wire hall type "pull down" sensor. ICM uses a reference voltage, and there's a signal voltage through the sensor. When the signal wire is grounded to the ICM, it thinks the switch is closed (signal voltage is pulled down from 5v-->0) Can't quite picture this, but the sensor ground...

    Wiring question for 4.3l Merc

Yes, with ignition on. Check the purple wire at the OP switch. Should have 12v. If not, check coil (+). Should have 12v off purple wire there.

Buying a used boat with Mercruiser 228

I would add that I'd pop the top cover off the outdrive to get a quick look at the condition of the upper gears

Buying a used boat with Mercruiser 228

It almost certainly doesn't They're all water cooled. Some have auto style closed systems running antifreeze, most don't. Echo the others, transom/stringers are most important. Drilling a core sample is the only reliable way to test the wooden components. Hammering, tapping, etc are fairly...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

Thought he was talking to me. How/why did you need to register? Mine was still recognized as having been changed in 2020 and listed the same parameters.

Thought my boat would be faster

Growing up had an '82 Galaxy 16' with a 120 OMC, it would hit mid-upper 30's

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

Ok, ready for this? Getting waste gate codes. Had BT scanner plugged in, apparently still powered with ignition off. Killed battery 100 miles from home (another story about getting a charger). Charged battery. Noticed on the way back (after every warning light tripped) that A/C doesn't work. Now...

Melted coil feed wire = Bad Pertronix?

It will show voltage but won't get hot because there isn't current through the wire. Reconnect it to the coil, disconnect neg wires and try again. If still good connect negatives one at a time.

    180rpm

Sure it does... Just put some debris or water in there 😀 Did you check the contents of your old filter? New gas +bad gas =more bad gas. All the water/crud hangs out at the bottom of your tank. Would check all that Ted mentioned, but usually it's bad gas/carb until proven otherwise. Can try...

Melted coil feed wire = Bad Pertronix?

Disconnecting the neg side of the coil will eliminate anything upstream as the problem. Is the wire still getting hot? Possible that the tach/wire is shorted to power, but not sure what the exact issue would be if that happened. You can also connect an ammeter in line to see where your increased...
