    Welding Aluminum

I'm no pro welder like Rick Stephens , but once I get things dialed in I do a decent job. I only weld aluminum once every year or two, so dialing in takes some time, and almost always a burnt back contact tip and a birds nest in the spool gun wire drive. Yesterday I did my dial in tip burn...

Model 40 twin cyl 'cheapo' motor as described by some. Clutch is a square wire Chinese finger trap self tightening coiled spring connecting the FWD gear hub to the prop shaft. Neutral lever drove a shaft down to catch a tab on the spring to open it up. Reverse was swinging the motor aft...

    Oops. Dang, forgot a part

Buttoned up the upper and lower halves of my drive today after some Spring maintenance on the upper. Cleaned up the water tube and pump coupler. But didn't see this sitting on the bench until I was ready to hang the drive on the boat. Well, I think I'm OK. This tube is basically a reassembly...

    Glassing in new motor mounts?

I had to pull my 4.3 to replace a frozen front mount, and to repair a twisted off lag on each side. Several methods for grubbing out the twisted off stumps. But I excavated the mount surface down 1/4" finished including a layer of glass. I fabed 1/4" aluminum plates so I could bridge over the...

    Glassing in new motor mounts?

nola mike I measured my 4.3 mount locations with a tape measure. The pic below gives the horizontal dimensions. These are probably close enough for you to locate your front mounts. The vertical distance between front and rear mounts is a little iffy since I was standing on my head, and measuring...

    Lateral engine alignment

No, I have a problem keyboarding. Mine is also 1.010" The only experience I've had removing the transom plate was helping my pal remove his. I don't recall if the gimbal hsg's bearing hub passed through the hole in the transom plate. The pic below says it does, and provides alignment between...

    Lateral engine alignment

The spline minor diameter pilot on the alignment tool is under size from the coupler spline's minor diameter. SAE spec on the coupler minor dia ispline is 1.005"/1.000". The tool's pilot is 1.001" dia. Possible interference. I've had my alignment tool in two different couplers while the engines...

Sending unit inaccessible / drill tank in place?

I replaced my sending unit while recarpeting. It was under the tank access panel. But I had to remove a lot of upholstery to get to the panel. So I cut in a floor access cover in case I need to get in there again. So consider one of these.

    Very Essential Non-special Tool

Using my stay at home time to do some PM. I couldn't find my 3/8" 12 pt socket to pull my top cover. I have an offset box end that worked OK to get the cover off. But I need to torque the cap screws later. So I donned the mask and headed for the hardware store. The clerk was wearing a mask...

    Drilling larger holes

I have a circle cutter like GA mentioned. It works well with a little practice. Another poster was wondering about cutting a large hole in his fuel tank. I suggested this as an alternative. HVAC guys use these to cut holes in duct work for star collars.

    Safely Cutting a fuel tank

Assuming your tank is aluminum, you should be good, especially with all of your prep. Aluminum doesn't spark. If steel, you should still be OK. Fumes are the risk. If you want to make a pretty hole, you may want to buy or rent one of these. ...I'm fixing to do my own duct work on a basement...
