62 Lone Star El Dorado restoration...maybe.

Well it’s been two years, and pulled the trigger on the replacement. I still need to bring it home- it’s sitting 500 miles away. I will start a new thread once I get started... maybe I’ll name her the Phoenix.

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

I couldn't resist. Plus this one looks like it is in pretty good shape, but I haven't gone over it in close detail. My first job is to make sure that the trailer is road-ready as I will be pulling it 1,800 miles in August. I will repack the hubs and check the leaf springs for cracks. Tires are...

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

Well the ice is starting melt at the cabin so summer must be coming soon. I received the replica stickers in the mail today... And I have been looking at LVLP Spray Guns.

    1963 LoneStar El Dorado Restoration

Great boat and good luck with your project. For the layout, I would stick with the controls outside the cabin. Most El Dorado's seem to be inside, but I had the model/option with it outside and it made sense to me. I was planning on keeping as original as possible with a few tweeks.

62 Lone Star El Dorado restoration...maybe.

Thanks guys! I emailed about it and I asked for more photos of the engine. One thing I like about the El Dorado is the additional head space in the cabin. I am 6' 3" so in the cruiseliner it seems like I would be crawling. Anyway, I have plenty to do. I need to cut up the wreckage. I will...

'59 Blues Star Islander -- complete restoration needed

Thanks Woodonglass. I have had great luck with a bench buffer wheel with white compound on most parts. Below is a rail part (unfortunately from the burnt out Lone Star) that came out well. Unfortunately the end caps don't polish this well. Which I think is from the rough casting. I think you're...

'59 Blues Star Islander -- complete restoration needed

Thanks Watermann. I checked and there is room to move it forward... Barely. I will tackle that when the weather gets better. Currently working on odds and ends. One is polishing these aluminum ends caps. (On a side note - I thought these were in my in-laws house which was destroyed in the...

62 Lone Star El Dorado restoration...maybe.

Well, it's been almost a month and we still haven't been able to get back up there to see the damage first hand. But a neighbor shared a photo of my mother-in-law's car in the driveway... it seems untouched by the fire! The El Dorado was parked off to the left... So still some hope. Trying to...

62 Lone Star El Dorado restoration...maybe.

I have been slowly getting an El Dorado Custom ready for restoration. I have it at my in-laws so I have only been able to work on it when I get up there. This boat is such a beauty! Unfortunately, the restoration may not happen it.... It is sitting right on the edge of the fire that is...

'59 Blues Star Islander -- complete restoration needed

After too many months off, I am back at it. I have pulled the transom to replace. A couple of questions. Is there a benefit of extending it for more strength? Also, any ideas of why it was "back buttered" at the top with what I assume is just resin ( brittle plastic feel) ?

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

Well the boat is back in the water... It looks good, but certainly there is room for improvement. There are areas of "orange peel" that I think are from the primer coats. I need to work on my technique a bit more before I paint any other boat projects - although there is more work to do on...

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

Thanks Watermann. I also re-read Woodonglass tractor paint tips. Again, I am amazed at how much I missed or didn't retain when I was reading his instructions prior to starting. The quick dry zinc chromate didn't have thinning instructions and it was thick stuff... I called the...

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

Finished stripping the paint this morning... I will clean-up with acetone this afternoon and tomorrow apply the quick dry zinc chromate followed by one of these -- I assume the Aluminium Primer (middle can) is the best option -- but open to all advice. Painting to start on Sunday if all...

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

Ugh, not the news I wanted. Since I am limited on time (vacation) here and tools, I can't do the patch myself at this time. I will check in town to see if there is anyone available to do a patch. Would the Marine Tex work as a temporary repair until the end of the summer? Probably another month...

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

It's on... We wrangled the boat out of the water and up to a work area. It didn't take long to find at least a primary issue. There is a 2" crack near/ through a rivet. A second crack is starting on the next rivet. I plan to use Marine Tex to repair. Question- Should I drill small holes at the...

    1970's Lund - Quick Rehab.

Hi All- I have a quick rehab project on the horizon -- our family has 1970's Lund fishing boat that we have used for many years. She has been a work horse! However, currently, the auto bilge pump is the only keeping her afloat. Unfortunately this boat is long way from home base. So the only...
