Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

To the S terminal on key switch and one of the small posts on the starter solenoid.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Then someone has already bypassed the in gear switch in the control.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Ya, red to black at the key switch sure should have let the smoke out of the fuse. Not sure why it didn't, maybe has very high resistance somewhere. Still that doesn't explain the chirping.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

I mean the two wires that DON"T go to the shifter. One of them will go to the key switch and the other will go back to the motor. The yellow/red wires coming out of the shifter usually have a quick disconnect somewhere in them.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

The gauges flat lining probably means you have a bad connection or wire in the system. That should have made it crank. Might want to try what @Jeff J suggested. It should be just aft of the starter. Big, black and round. Might be a bit buried behind other stuff. Spray some contact cleaner in it...

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

You should never move the shifter unless the engine is running or you're turning the prop by hand. The way this controller is supposed to work is when in neutral you push the button in and it disconnects the shift cable. Sounds like yours is messed up.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Great. Here is what those wires do. At the throttle, the two yellow/red wire are for the start in gear. If you want to bypass this switch, disconnect both of them and connect the the ones that DON"T go to the handle to each other. The red is power to the trim switch, when you move the switch up...

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Possible, I’d probably check for power and ground at the key switch first. But depending on access, might be easier to bypass start in gear switch.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Thanks for the heads up, tried to post one the other day and thought I was doing something wrong. Maybe the OP can post a description of wire colors for switch and controller. I should add for OP, be careful when jumping starter solenoid. Engine might start if boat harness is disconnected...

    Don't see fuel in jets

    Yes, pull the cord.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

I should have said. If the motor now cranks, that means the problem is on the boat side. If so post some pictures of the front and back of both the ignition switch and the throttle lever.

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Now remove one of the meter leads. Hold one end to the big stud on the solenoid with the red wires and then touch the other end to the small stud with the yellow with red tracer wire going to it. Does the motor now crank?

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

At the starter solenoid. The 2 small posts. Yellow with red tracer wire gets the red meter probe. Black probe goes to the small black wire. Turn key to start and see what the meter says.

    Don't see fuel in jets

Maybe someone else can answer this ---- I haven't worked on a carb engine for decades. But maybe you should check to see if you're getting fuel to the carb first?

    Don't see fuel in jets

    1. Yellow hose probably means this has an mechanical fuel pump. Yellow hose sends fuel to the carb in case the diaphragm in the pump ruptures --- there should never be fuel in it. Metal line supplies fuel to the carb. 2. Out of fuel, blockage in fuel system, bad fuel pump, stuck float needle...

    Need advice 96 Merc

This looks to be a "deadhead" engine. No cylinder head. It can be pretty hard to drop the 4 pistons and crank back into the block without the correct tools. It can be done, but it won't be easy. Might want to get one of those cheap borescopes that connect to your phone and take a look at the...

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

Per a previous post that has s/n 0G738574 listed. This is a MARINER 75 ELPTO Manufacture Date: 03/10/1998 Do you have a voltmeter and know how to use it? Have you checked the fuse? It's in a holder above the starter solenoid.
