Best way to test exhaust manifold?

acetone is pretty universally used and accepted here, it wicks in cracks much more so than water soul you would see it. Unless the manifold is hot I could see it hiding cracks using compressed air. Also with air you need to block off the riser connection. One other items to look at are the...

    Broken Forward Gear? Cause?

the parts breakdown for a 228 in the serial year/ number range listed for his engine shows a preload pin - 14 & 15 in breakdown https://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercruiser-sterndrive-parts/228-19781892/4898730-thru-6225576/gear-housing-assembly-complete

    projects other than boats

i did 1400 sf of 3/4" solid x5" wide. The 5" wide has hard to fit tight like less wide flooring i have done in the past, hard enough that it was 50/50 chance of bending the nails when top nailing the last couple rows.... but it doesn't dent

I did hickory flooring because of our animals , that holds up pretty well but is an MF to work with from a hardness standpoint and moisture movement

Spark plugs and cap replacement interval

The crab caps seem to be more prone to issues and cross firing Causing a miss. I change mine every 5 years or so in fresh water as the terminals get crusty. Still runs fine but just try to stay ahead of it. I keep a spare in a freezer bag on the Boat

Merc 350 bolt v 2 barrel carb fluctuating RPMS

Easiest plug and play is to find a used module and try it. Delco est is also a very good / oem quality system but you will have to do some minor rewiring. have you verified there is no play in the distributor shaft and rotor? And when you say timing is even it is no longer jumping around ...

    Broken Forward Gear? Cause?

It could be the gears and or bearings had corrosion from sitting. Did i read that correct it was sitting from 1985 =>2017? When I bought my current boat in 2015, it was a 2004 that had only 37 hours on it. the lube that came out was pretty dark, assume it had never been changed. Had zero issue...

    Mercruiser Setting Timing on 3.0L

if you have zero compression in two adjacent cylinders that would normally point to a blown head gasket between them. yes unplug center wire on dist , throttle wide open, engine warmed up. Fuel pump doesn't matter as once the bowl is full the float/ needle and seat will close off fuel supply

    Screeching Noise from Frankenstein 383

what you outline is the same as others post on the car sites. While this provides many benefits, the guys who think it will be plug and play vs a carb are disappointed. I know running a carb I will have to rebuild it 1-2 times during the lifespan of owning the boat, but I also like I can do...

    torque or angle torque

the bolt is what stretches. I think bolts designed this way hold their torque better. Mini uses it on the cam and crank sprockets there are no keys ways or traditional timing marks. You buy a tool to index the cams, put a pin in the flywheel, tension the timing chain and lock them down with...

    Screeching Noise from Frankenstein 383

I'm the opposite I prefer the carb on my boat as it can be fixed with simple hand tools. So in your experience it holds up ok? My other hobby is muscle cars and you seem to hear mixed reviews for folks, mostly that some of the systems are not OEM quality systems like on modern cars

    Engine mount nut sizes

2003 vintage since I turned a 4.3 into a 5.0 I technically dont have a merc serial. Original 4.3 serial was OM694685, that is what the side engine mounts are from. I am going to do an alignment - what size are the adjustment nuts on the side engine mounts? I thought they were 1 & 1/16" or 1 &...

    Prop Swap opinions...

this has been my experience with 4 blades as well, not only for my own boat but a neighbors as well. be interested to see if you can hit 4800 maybe a tad higher. Not that you have to wind it out that often but when pitched to the top end of the WOT rpm range throttle response is much better...

    torque or angle torque

the rachet head broke set at 85 ft lbs. I bought a used snap on, No sense screwing around with angles on a cheap wrench. Because this was middle of doing a timing chain on the wife's mini I punted and just marked the bolt head for the angles, which also worked just fine as long as you can get at...

Merc 350 bolt v 2 barrel carb fluctuating RPMS

Yes . Some mercs have two grey wires on the negative coil post. One tach one to module. If you have two disconnect the tach one. Some mercs have the tach signal wire bonded to the single grey off the coil. In this case tach the signal wire off the back of the tach to test
