    Mercruiser 5.0 MPI idling problem

Sticky transom shift cable keeping shift interrupt engaged too long. Merc momentarily shorts out ignition to allow dog clutch to release fwd or rev gear to get into neutral. OMC Cobra like mine has an electronic module that cuts spark to half the cyls to do the same thing but the engine never...

    TB5 Chevy 350 Thermostat.

I think with a closed system the closer to what would be a normal automotive engine temp the better, a 160 stat in that system will usually run from 160-180* but because it’s a pressurized system it won’t cause localized boiling like it could in an open system. The benefits of warmer running are...

Mercruiser 5.7L Black Scorpion grinding noise when in neutral

Yep it's two bolts but they are under the engine, kinda close to where the bell housing would be. A lot depends on how big of a person you are. I have done mine a few times over 20 years with this boat, but I re configured the rear seats so they can be removed individually and I can lie down...

Boat with paint cracks and hull damage

As I said about the you tube vid where the guy actually did this, when it comes time to sell it what do you disclose to the unwitting buyer? If you tell the truth as we ALL know you should who would buy it? Or do you wind up with a project you can’t sell, due to legal reasons?

Mercruiser 5.7L Black Scorpion grinding noise when in neutral

Curious so I looked these appear to use a V drive with the rear of the engine in the forward end of the engine compartment it looks like the frame for the tow rope needs to be removed prob along with the exhaust to get at it. Might not be that bad of a job.

Boat with paint cracks and hull damage

Watched the vid of the guy who did it. Fab work was very impressive but he didn’t explain how he dealt with J1171. What if he sells the boat & something bad happens? Does he disclose that? All this stuff matters in a litigious society like ours.

Boat with paint cracks and hull damage

Well no one is doubting the skill & experience of the OP here but these things are also a matter of regulatory compliance & liability. If no J1171 approved starters alternators and ignition systems exist for this engine and God Forbid there’s an accident traced to that, you can bet there will be...

Mercruiser 5.7L Black Scorpion grinding noise when in neutral

That can be a big job in terms of labor, is this an I/O or a straight inboard? If it were my boat I’d check to see if I had good enough access to the starter, on some boats you have to remove the exhaust on that side to gain enough access. If you can do that and the ring gear looks OK I’d...

    5.0LX surging/stumbling

As far as the tools given the access is not easy like a Holley 2 or 4 bbl it is easier with the style of tool that has the flex shaft with the various attachments. That’s what I use and when you do the port side one beware the spinning alternator fins & belt! The starboard side one is hard to see.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

With the stats I always test them in a pot of hot water with an old style radiator thermometer before installing to make sure they open at the rated temp and far enough. When installing I use some gasket sealer on the gasket & bolts but nothing on the o ring. As far as winterizing what I do is...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

Well all we have here is coastal salt water. They can be made to last as I have done, but it takes a lot of work. As far as extra maintenance & repairs in salt water, what I’ve found it’s mostly the anti fouling of the outdrive & transom mount. Not many actual repairs needed, I just resealed the...

    I/O (Sterndrive) Conversion to Outboards

I've had a good run with mine but would I buy another, not for here I wouldn't, I would consider repowering it, but really the only reason to put up with I/Os here is if you want a cruiser type boat, that can be powered by a single engine, that has good engine access, and NO cat converter...
