    Replacing an Alpha1 Gen1 205 V6 for 87 Cobalt 17BR

Yes a 4.3 V6 engine will use a 1.81 ratio drive. Yours is an alpha gen 1 so an SEI drive in that ratio is the easiest bolt in replacement . usually when the upper gear shred it is low on lube. I would frequently check the lube level. likely the input shaft seal leaked oil into the bellows and...

    Stern Drive Mystery

As mentioned by others reving in neutral doesn't mean anything. This is why they always recommend doing a water test under load. Of course as the seller I wouldn't insist on it ... last time I sold a boat he didnt even ask me to start it. How long did it sit? Could be contaminated fuel gummed...

    Torn seal leaking gear lube

Yes there is a small quad ring (basically a square O ring) that can get knocked out or forgotten when you reassemble the two halves of the drive. Lube leaking out the water intake is most likely the seal below the impeller. He may have taken the bearing carrier off to replace the seal then not...

    Starved for fuel

Depending on year, MerCruisers had mechanical or electric fuel pumps. What do you have? a 3.0 carbed motor will have a mechanical fuel pump. Lets back up - 3 yrs ago carb rebuild running well? Did a tune up ? What was done during tune up? Timing set correctly - some require being in base...

    Torn seal leaking gear lube

Keep going to second mechanic. First guy probably tore the driveshaft seals in upper when he reassembled after splitting the unit to do the water pump... then didn't tighten the u joint nut when he replaced these seals. So yes first guy didn't assemble it correctly. I would dispute the...

I need help, boat runs rough and stalls. I pumped new gas and lots more.. I need help

for me was the '94 VW Fox. I bought my advance timing light in the early 90's. The Sun Pro Tach and Dwell I bought at the same time just died, so I took the one out of my dads garage "All American" brand ... I think is from mid 60's - still works... if you dont drop it it will be a lifetime...

I need help, boat runs rough and stalls. I pumped new gas and lots more.. I need help

Your mark is on the pulley not balancer? You can do the math to figure out where 27 degrees BTDC is and put a chalk, paint white out...what ever mark . Some auto parts stores have loaner tools like timing lights. If you have a gear head in the neighborhood or older guy who is shade tree...

Mercruiser 250hp Stern Drive Bravo 3 leg dirty sea Strainer

As above sea water strainer will be between the raw water pump and the drive or through hull pick up. Once you open it water can come in so make sure it is valved off ... top of strainer should come off

Mercruiser 250hp Stern Drive Bravo 3 leg dirty sea Strainer

Id start by getting the weed growth off the outdrives or do u have through hull water pick ups? If you have a strainer and yiu can close them off in the water open them and see what’s in there. Also could be an issue with the raw water pump impellers. If flow is restricted they may have been...

I need help, boat runs rough and stalls. I pumped new gas and lots more.. I need help

In theory yes unless you are look8ng for an issue. Never hurts to confirm if total advance is correct. If the module is not working right and yiu don’t get enough advance you will be down on power. Alternatively too much advance can cause detonation and the engine will hammer itself to death

I need help, boat runs rough and stalls. I pumped new gas and lots more.. I need help

You need an advance timing light to check total. Rev the engine up to 2800 and use the advance feature it will adjust the timing so the light hits at tdc mark. I have an old school one with an advance dial. I would set the dial to 27 degrees. When correct it will tweak the timing of the flash...

I need help, boat runs rough and stalls. I pumped new gas and lots more.. I need help

We have all done it. I was swapping jets on my GTO and went one notch leaner on test run it ran like crap. Went to swap old ones back in, found a piece of airhorn gasket blocking one of the jets. go through checking timing, turn idle speed down, and adjust idle mix. Rough it in on the trailer...

    5.7 replaced with a 6.2 ?

Look on the bright side if it is as represented that is a nice upgrade. Hit rodders used to take a longer stroke crank out of a sbc 400 and drop it into a 350 block. Took slight clearancing of the block to clear the rods, eventually GM started making them and it was adopted into marine use. 2015...

    5.7 replaced with a 6.2 ?

A 6.2 is the marine version of the old hot rodders stroked 5.7 So they can be carbed or mpi. If correctly set up would be around 340 hp With a significant increase in torque. Would need to see the combo. You can look on sites like michigan motorz or marine engines for less that sell partial...

What size and brand of fuel tank to get?

6 gal is probably perfect for what you are doing. My brother has a 17 ft with 50 hp Yamaha 4 stroke and six gallons will take us 10-12 miles down lake and back fishing both sides of a fairly wide lake. Would figure would at least double the fuel use with the step up in power

Looking at buying a 2006 Bayliner Cierra 2455 that has seen better days at auction with an eye to restore it. Not sure what to look for.

read the restoration forums on floor, stringer and transom replacement. Even if these were good you should be getting it for free vs them disposing of it.

How to prime fuel after winter / fogging

If it has points they may need filing and setting. I have found and inexpensive spark gap tester is helpful to see if you have a good spark. Given the voltage drop during cranking you probably have no spark.

    Maintenance Grease/Oil

the 2-4-C is for sliding applications like cables. Rotational - you can use any grease. I have used Lucas red and tacky for many years, any decent grease will work including the west marine you mention. On a gen one drive you have to remove it to grease the coupler splines and u joints. The...
