    Mercruiser 3.0 Engine knocking noise

It’s not uncommon for engines to start making noise after getting hot. Water in the oil never helps. As the group has mentioned there are a few items to look at otherwise pull the engine and tear into it.

Very Low Compessions on Mercruiser 5.0 MPI Engine. with Exhaust Manifold, Thermostat Housing Removed.

Yeah that much corrosion would also think it was a U boat , maybe why it got parked. If that is the case will need more than a head gasket

prop recommendations for Trophy walk around 25 foot

you don’t . Yeah something doesn’t add up, unless gear case is different ratio. As you said we’re more interested in this thread than the OP. thanks for sharing those real world numbers. I wonder what max hp rating is for that boat

Very Low Compessions on Mercruiser 5.0 MPI Engine. with Exhaust Manifold, Thermostat Housing Removed.

Would also look for signs of water intrusion in the exhaust as that could hang up valves . Might be worth doing a leak down test before pulling head off to pinpoint where u are loosing compression doing a cold compression test would typically expect slightly lower numbers as when engine is up...

prop recommendations for Trophy walk around 25 foot

Could be wrong but I would think that based off the comment below. if he knew his current rpm would think it is fairly easy to estimate about 400 rpm drop going up 2”, and 800 rpm drop going up 4” in pitch assuming staying with similar prop type. Maybe I misinterpreted but cant imagine if the...

I think if you read his post he is hitting the pm limit before throttle is fully open, hence “we won’t know “ of course he hasn’t been back so we are just talking to ourselves

    Mercruiser 3.0 Engine knocking noise

the front of the motor items are water pump, gear drive for cam shaft, fuel pump, cam and lifters are accessible on starboard side behind covers. Any of those items could be damaged by lack of lubrication due to water in oil.

    Mercruiser 3.0 Engine knocking noise

Can you narrow down where the noise is coming from? have you run it with out the drive and taken the belts off to see if it is an accessory or water pump, gimbal bearing ujoint etc? Flywheel loose? Would spend some time trying to figure out where it it coming from - loose rocker ?

Easiest engine drop in replacement for 1986 MCM 470

I was under the impression the 3.7 used a Chevy bellhousing bolt pattern but could be FOS Maybe @Scott Danforth or @nola mike may know Scott and Mike - OP wants to swap his 3.7 for a 4.3 (preferred or maybe 3.0) does the 3.7 flywheel cover (alpha one gen 1 drive so later mount spacing) fit a...

Easiest engine drop in replacement for 1986 MCM 470

I think the flywheel cover unless it is pre 1981 is should work. when the transition around '81 from MC1 to R/MR/Alpha one happened merc changed the distance between the rear motor Mounts. So unless you have a mc transom housing it should fit. You will need a wye pipe and yes easiest way is to...

Easiest engine drop in replacement for 1986 MCM 470

If it will fit in the doghouse or engine compartment a 4.3 will work great and be a power and reliability upgrade especially if you get a Vortec one with a 4 bbl carb (220 hp). If you don't have room a 3.0 will drop in and if you go down 2" in prop pitch work with same drive gearing. The 4.3...

Prop questions on a 16' 1976 StarCraft Montego (Merc 888)

Never used any of the composite props. If you have one sure why not use it. I suspect if they were better you would see more of them around. Sounds like you are up to speed on the other issues and possible pertronix stuff.

83 Chevy 350 SB valve springs w uneven heights? Is that normal?

Assuming they are the same spring they should have the same installed spring height. Not sure if that height is correct for the spring in question, which is key to having correct seat pressure on the valve. as Scott Danforth pointed out - are the valve stems at the same height when installed...
