Exhaust elbow for Volvo Penta engine with catalytic converter

Over time there will be fewer and few engines without catalytic converters. So the aftermarket will dry up. Is it just VP or no exhaust parts for Mercruiser with catalytic converters either?

Exhaust elbow for Volvo Penta engine with catalytic converter

Has anyone found an aftermarket source for exhaust elbows for Volvo Penta gas engines with catalytic converter? I am told they are only OEM, not aftermarket.

    2012 VP 300 C-A Exhaust manifolds getting too hot - DTC 441 & 442

Do you use an electric pump to pump in the pink antifreeze?

Yes I recently found out about Fleetguard yellow OAT coolant as a direct replacement for VP VCS. That means (I think) you can top off with Fleetguard yellow OAT. What is your winterization plan?

I finally got the workshop manuals for my engine. I ordered them from Volvo Penta and they were shipped from Sweden. You would think Volvo Penta would stock them in the USA. The Seloc manual is worthless compared to the Volvo Penta workshop manuals.

First time winterizing my boat myself.

In reality there are additives in the motor oil that deal with the acid from combustion byproducts until the TBN reaches about 1. Of course doing an oil analysis to find out the TBN cost about as much as changing the oil.

    Winterization Question

There is some concern whether an engine mounted sea water pump will draw in pink antifreeze from the muffs. Typically they use the muffs only when the sea water pump is in the outdrive. Otherwise you need to attach your bucket of my pink antifree to the sea water pump intake. Some boats...

There are different thermostats for FWC and RWC engines. People have been known to install thermostats upside down.

That sounds about right. I would leave my Mercruiser filled with antifreeze for the winter.

    2012 VP 300 C-A Exhaust manifolds getting too hot - DTC 441 & 442

Well running the engine at 1500 rpm for 15 minutes seems to have purged the air out of the system. Ran the engine today in the water for 20 min at 1500 RPM and no overheating. Both exhaust manifolds stayed around 170F. Of course the directions on the expansion tank say exactly what needs to...

Would the coolant temp dash gauge show the same or close to the same temp as the IR temperature gun reading the exhaust manifold?

If it's full closed cooling then the gasket between the exhaust manifold and riser blocks any cooling water flowing. If it is RWC then the gasket will allow water to flow between the exhaust manifold and riser. I have also seen where the proper gasket was used for RWC but too much black...

    2012 VP 300 C-A Exhaust manifolds getting too hot - DTC 441 & 442

Would my IR temp be as good as using the Diacom? I have to take my laptop into the cabin to be able to read it. Kind of a PIA. IR temp gun is a lot easier.

    2012 VP 300 C-A Exhaust manifolds getting too hot - DTC 441 & 442

I used my cell phone camera to enlarge the directions on the expansion tank. Should have read it first. It says to fill the expansion tank and run the engine at 1500 RPM for 10 minutes.

Now do I do a couple of 10 minute runs at 2000 RPM (with cooling time between each run) to try and get the air out or drain the coolant into a clean bucket and then vacuum fill it from the clean bucket of used coolant?

With a boat with closed cooling you could analyze the engine oil, coolant and outdrive gear oil. I have a WIX coolant analysis kit to use before winter.

I routinely do oil analysis (UOA) for the oil in my diesel pickup. But I run the oil for 16K miles typically. However the oil sump is 14 QTs and I use a bypass oil filter that filters down to 2 microns. You will see many of my UOAs for diesel engines and older ones for gas engines. Wife says...

I asked the same question on a few forums. One being BoaterEd.com. It was a very active forum when George and Lou were around and ran a marine parts company. I am active also on Bobistheoilguy.com. You have to be a pedantic oil guy to enjoy that forum. They have a boating sub-topic.

That hose is from the riser so it's sea water. It's scheduled for spring 2023 in my notebook.
