5.0 GXI Cracked Block Need Help Sourcing New Parts

Since this is a quick fix just replace the core plugs but you probably need a set of manifolds. Do not worry about replacing the head gaskets. Pay attention to the flywheel and starter mounting so that every thing matches up. The cam swap is up to you and requires dropping the pan and timing...

    1989 Mercruiser 4.3 LX, Alpha 1 Gen 1 Overheating

Low speed or idling heating is sometimes caused by a blockage in the by pass hole in the thermostat housing. Are the manifolds completely free flowing? Have you looked closely at the plastic cover in the bottom of the upper housing, it should show no appearance of melting. With the boat in the...

1987 Mercruiser 454 Loud 'Popping Noise'

Does your engine have the original ignition system? Has there been any carburetor work done recently? With an ohm meter check the resistance of the coil and spark plug wires. Any idea how long the spark plugs have been in service? Be sure that all electrical connections at the ignition...

    Aruba for our 30th anniversary

A few years ago the wife and I took a cruise from New Orleans to the ABC islands. All were very interesting. Aruba, Bonaire & Courasal. Not like other Caribbean islands where the locals are constantly in your face trying to hustle you for $.

    volvo penta water pump

Genuine marine circulating pumps have cast iron impellers and stainless steel backing plates some even have bronze impellers. Automotive style have stamped steel impellers with plain steel rear covers. If your engine is fresh water cooled with coolant then the automotive would hold up. If...

Mercruiser Oil Pan Replacement and Protection

When your engine was new and paint was applied the 3 spokes of the balancer blocked any paint. I bet your cover is so thin in spots that if you pushed an ice pick against it would go right through. While the cover can be changed with the oil pan installed it is a PITA.

Mercruiser Oil Pan Replacement and Protection

I used to spray the timing cover with the balancer off and the pan with 3M underbody spray. I even did this on new Re power engines. This was before I had access to bed liner coating which should work also. When changing the pan it is a good time to replace the timing cover.

    Sooty buildup in thermo housing

If it is belt dust then the pulleys are probably rusted and the flame arrestor needs cleaning.

Turn the boat, kill the engine.

The best way to repair any connections is with either soldering with shrink wrap or using crimp terminals with shrink wrap. Even home depot has a pretty good selection. An electronics specialty shop would have the best of if there is one near. NAPA and the usual auto stores are another...

Turn the boat, kill the engine.

There may be some water sloshing around in the carburetor float bowl. All it takes is a few drops. As far as electrical the wiring harness and steering could be somehow in contact. Also should check the ignition switch to make sure non of the wires are loose.

    Volvo B20 water in oil

Other than the engine or the head there are other places that put water in the oil. The engine oil cooler is one of them. As previously mentioned the water pump is also a possibility.. You need to get all the rubber sealing grommets that seal the pipes along with a gasket set. The block may...

    Removing trim senders screws

If the screws have to finally be broken off the best easiest way is to drill new holes clocked about 1/4” from the broken screws. You will need a #21 or a 5/32” drill bit then with a 10/32 tap thread new holes. There is no way you will be able to drill out the old screws without making bigger...

    1972 Mercruiser 888 Fueling Questions

If your Holley carburetor will not idle smooth with idle mixture screws 1.5 turns from lightly seated then you need to get the correct marine rebuild kit. The idle stop screw should be 1-1.5 turns to be in the sweet spot. Hopefully the suction tube in the tank is not cracked or perforated from age.

Rudder posts weeping water. Is it a big deal to fix or adjust?

Try to post a picture of the rudder assembly. Some have adjustable packing gland. Also sometimes the leak is where the mounting flange is sealed to the inside of the hull. That can be caused from running aground or striking a submerged object.

Knocking sound - what is it? [video]

One way to find an exhaust leak is to squirt some automatic transmission oil into the carburetor. If there is a leak you will see the smoke.

4.3 Mercruiser submerged - Perplexing problem

As Scott06 said the wire harness “cooked” internally from being submerged with the battery being connected. You most probably need new battery cables. Also the feed wires to the trim pump could be damaged. Also the drive needs to come off and the gimbal bearing , universal joints and input...

    Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E - Won't roll over

Checking the edges with a flat edge may show if there is distortion. I cannot remember ever having a leak in that area. I used to put 15 lbs of pressure to check them. Maybe MUC has seen leaks in that area.

    My boat run slowly. 120HP,2.5L,1989

If the rotor shaft bushing in the distributor is worn out that will cause the timing and dwell to continually go out of range. That could be what caused the spark plug damage. Also if the pins that hold the fly weights under the breaker plate are allowing the timing to over advance.
