Disconnect the front control box shift cable from the converter box. Then try shifting to see if the binding is in that cable rather than the lower one.

Volvo Penta AQ125/270 overheating raw water not pumping

Try what I mentioned, by submerging the suction hose in a bucket of water or just stick a garden hose in it. If the pump does not pull water then I bet either the 1/2 moon key somehow slipped out or the pump drive coupler is not turning the pump shaft.

    3.7 Mercruiser Running Hot

With the boat in the water remove the drive pump water supply hose on the heat exchanger, start the engine and try to stop the water with you hand at idle speed. You should not be able to hold it back. If you can then there is a pressure leak between the drive pump and the heat exchanger. Either...

    Outdrive Popping

He still had to remove the 2 rear vertical mounting bolts that Achris posted. As Scott also said the drive has to come off to set the shaft alignment. If it is not aligned the drive coupler aluminum splines or the rubber part will fail and leave you paddling.

    Outdrive Popping

Chris, post a picture of the arrangement of the rear motor mounting bolts and spacers. I bet they have them wrong.

    3.7 Mercruiser Running Hot

When the impeller was replaced did you inspect the plastic pocket cover in the upper housing? If it is melted and distorted you will lose water pressure and have a overheating problem. Also a partially blocked exhaust riser. Connect a 3/4”garden hose from the heat exchanger outlet hose to the...

Volvo Penta 3.0 GLP Stalling when reducing from high RPM.

The only other thing that I have seen cause this problem is the rotor in the distributor. What happens is as the boat is coming off plane it puts a load on the ignition and the high tension spark goes through the rotor to the distributor shaft.

Try filing the points or just replace them. Ignition points build up some corrosion from long storage. If you do buy a set be sure to buy them from NAPA. Set the gap .016-.017.Stay away from those “big box” auto stores. If you decide to convert to electronic here are the Prestolite kit...

1986 5.7 upper gear case shim question?

The thing I liked about the stern drive repairs is the shimming tools. With those you knew it was right. Is the gimbal bearing good?

1986 5.7 upper gear case shim question?

That is going to be the best way. Just be sure that you can feel some “back lash”. Just like a ring and pinion. Too much will use be a little noisy but you know what no “back lash” can do. When filling the drive there is a vent screw mid point on the side of the lower gear case, when the...

1986 5.7 upper gear case shim question?

The joints r&r just like a auto drive shaft. To ease your mind just replace the the shim with the same color that was there before. And it will be good. I had all the special holding fixtures for the stern drives. They are just a real PITA to work on without them. Clamp the drive on a...

1986 5.7 upper gear case shim question?

Under the front bearing retainer where the shims go. That is where you place the feeler gauge while holding pressure on the retainer. Once you figure out the clearance select the shims and subtract .002. The rear bearing cup is what sets the back lash. The shims provide the preload on the bearings.

1986 5.7 upper gear case shim question?

The plastic shims under the input retainer are for setting the pre load on the input shaft bearings. Used bearings are happy with 6-8 inch lbs of rolling torque. Without the shims hold the retainer tight against the bearings, measure with a feeler gauge under the retainer, then subtract 2...
