How do you test a lower unit for leaks.

I use a brake bleeder/ vacuum gauge and check with both pressure and vacuum. It is possible for a seal to leak in one direction and not the other. Im happy with 10 psi. And I agreed with Racer on the using a compressor. It only take a split second to blow the seal.

What glue secures the charge coil to the lamination assembly?

You may find shims holding it in place and you may need very little or even no glue.

    Rings for 4006E

Agreed Anything with a gauge on it from harbor freight is suspect in my eyes. I admit I have a few HB tools but wouldn’t trust anything that needs to be accurate to be accurate.

    Johnson 55 crank threads

If it were me I would clean them up with a small triangle file. Work slow and carefully. Patients Pays.

    Johnson 55 flywheel nut differences

I can’t say for sure but my guess is you will need the extra height of the original to get the recoils components on and still catch enough threads on the crank. Just a thought.

Using it can save your life and the life of others. Not having one can cost you a hefty fine in some states.

Starboard cylinders overheating, but no thermostat installed

Agreed on checking with another gauge to confirm these numbers. Do you plan on pulling the heads to check the diverters. I’m sure you will find even more crud there as well. Best

    Lapping flywheel

A little less compound would be helpful imo. Also I once saw a guy coat the crank with a marker and rotated the flywheel on the shaft to check for wear points. I have never done it personally but it looked like it was a good way to check the fit.

    $250 Boat in my possession!!

I used a product called SeaCast to rebuild a transom once. Its a great product. My transom was so rotten I didn’t even have to cut the glass on the inside or out. I was able to dig out all the rot it was so far gone. It is very important to get ever last chunk of wood out if you go this route.

Johnson 55 hp electric start conversion.

Agreed. That’s all I did on an 02 40hp. I charge the battery at the start of summer and keep it topped off with a solar charger. It lasts all season with not problems.
