No voltage regulator on older Mercury. Can I add one?

don't know 'bout you but i've run tha 9's and 16's without a reg. from early production 150 2.0s ta later stem winder 280/300+ 2.5's without seein' 16+ ona gauge (usually 'bout 14/14.5 at most).. or boilin' a battery?.. but thats jus my experience........................

No voltage regulator on older Mercury. Can I add one?

jus my way a thinkin'... if ya have a "factory" motor that does not come with a regulator and its puttin' out 16+ volts i'd say ya have a problem that a reg. may/may not fix... my understanding that with a "non" regulator motor tha battery serves as tha regulator............. i'd be lookin' at...

    Back to the same problem

sounds like it may be what i'm referrin' to if you used a dial indicator on each cylinder ta establish TDC on each for a starting point for timing on that cylinder.. over tha years i've found out on tha V6 that idle timin' numbers recommended in manuals and such worked fairly well for a start...

    Back to the same problem

so tha flywheel has degree markings ALL tha way around it??? if so are you doing tha timing thing on tha cylinder that reads highest?

    Back to the same problem

tha reason for disregarding tha "numbers" is this.. you are setting tha timing on ONE of six holes.. unless tha flywheel is indexed you have no way of knowing what it may or may not be on tha other five holes.. any one (or all five) of them may/may not be different from tha one ya usin' ta set...

    Back to the same problem

idle speed and/or rpm is controlled by tha idle timing ONLY (10/32 screw on tha timin' arm) no other screw should be turned ta adjust idle period... tha carbs have an idle circuit that can't be adjusted without changing tha jets.. tha numbers for idle timin' really have no bearing on what ya may...

    1998 Merc 150 Stiff Steering

you need ta check tha cables AFTER ya pull 'em outta tha tubes on tha motor before ya go ta all tha trouble of cleanin' something that may/may not be tha problem.. there is a shop built (coonass engineered) tool that works really well with completely cleanin' and relube (with air pressure) tha...

tha "silver disk" mentioned is actually a welsh plug on top of tha motor, right behind tha flywheel....

    Identifying old 150

jan.. i don't think tha actual XR2 designation came till '85 for production but some merc manuals and parts list include that badge for earlier year 2.0 motors of almost generic parts between both 150's ('87 being last year of tha XR2).. thats why its good ta nail down tha production...

if ya look on tha block kinda right behind tha bend in tha timin' arm there's gonna be a "build" date.. m/d/yr.. 1/8" numbers.. might be hard ta see but its there............. those type cowls came out in '89... who ever did tha cowl bungies, vents, decals did a GOOD job!
