    Updating the motor on an old boat

    My oldest daughter had a 1975 which was rated for 80hp with a 70hp Johnson and it had plenty of power. Looked up the specs for the 1977 and it is listed as 100# heavier and rated for 90hp. Now sure how well 50 hp would do on yours.

    Kill switch help

    Normally purple would be the positive power feed from the "A" terminal on the key switch. This should feed gauges, such as the tach, and any other thing that should be powered when the key switch is in the on position. All bets are off if someone has fooled with the wiring.

    MERCURY 1983 25 1025203 MERC 25 If the number is 9386139. I can't tell from the picture if the 4th digit is a 6. 1025203 is the model number.

    Looked it up. Does the motor cover look like this. Looked closer at the tag and is and OMC product. If you can decipher the model number and serial number on the internet you can find the year.

    Looks like a 1960's Johnson or Evinrude that has been repainted. High Tide may have been lettered on there to match the boat name. Just looking at the cowling shape reminds be of a 1965 I had years ago.

    That orange (red) on the brass plus is more than likely just pipe dope. Could be Permatex, Locktite or any other brand of pipe sealer. I think the companies made it red so us old timers would think it was as good as the old red lead pipe dope.

    That bird is an Eurasian Common Kingfisher and it is next to impossible to tell the sexes apart. The North American Belted Kingfisher which most of us are more familiar with is one of the few birds where the female is more colorful.
