1966 Jonhson 9.5 rust around exhaust cover

Agree with above....I think it was overheated once. You might have issues so pulling the head, inspecting, resurfacing and installing a new gasket might be in order.

1982 Johnson 7.5hp Backfires but No Start (Wrong Carb?)

Yes I agree, wires from mag need to be switched going to your coils. Should be orange blue to top perhaps. Does your motor have the airbox? And where is the choke knob? Motor still isn't running?

    1988 48 special carbs

His motor came with the 89 carbs on it and it didn't run right, it also came with parts including the 88 carbs. He rebuilt those so he now has the conclusions above.

    My old Motor

My etec, which I bought brand new, is an amazing machine. The fuel economy makes it worth it alone. At the end of the day it's still just a motor so you take care of it just like any other motor. More sensors of coarse and the components cost more it sure runs nice. This is where the future...

Does this indicate water in lower unit oil?

Behind the screw on the case, make sure it's not corroded up. Clean it up so the washer seats nice. No tape should be needed.

Does this indicate water in lower unit oil?

Some oils look that way. If it's been sitting then water should come out first. Vacuum or pressure test to 15 lbs or so.....you can make a tool. You might be ok.

short shaft outboard on a 21" transom

Craigslist people constantly advertise the wrong shaft length. Have him measure from the bottom of the mount clamps to the top of the anti-ventalation plate.

Best way to free steering cable retainer nut stuck on tilt tube shaft

I've had many issues with steering cables and such but not that exact issue. You should be able to get a pipe wrench on the other side to hold the tube while you spin the nut off on the other side. You could use jam nuts also.

    Dry Firing Outboard

I have a place with buoys to moor the boat....the neighbors kids dry fire the engine quite a bit and then lower the engine. They seem to be fine. Like was stated at low rpm? Probably fine. Other factors apply like age of the impeller.

1982 Johnson 7.5hp Backfires but No Start (Wrong Carb?)

What's wrong with your carb? Post a picture of your motor from farther back.

1982 Johnson 7.5hp Backfires but No Start (Wrong Carb?)

I agree with Crosby, coils are probably wired backwards, switch plug wires and test.

    1996 50 hp adjustment question

Pretty sure it wasn't that high when it left the factory floor but sounds like compression is good.

    Fuel primer inop

My uncle was an omc dealer in the 60's through the 70's and I always hung out at his shop. Never remember them then. Your motor easily could have had an intake/carb swap allowing it to have a primer. Here is a breakdown of the 79 intake and carbs.....electric choke, no primer. I'm pretty...
