    Gears and bearings were more robust in some 1960's motors than typical same power motors today.----If I had a 60 degree 4 cylinder I would contemplate / modify and install a pre 1995 model V-4 gearcase.

    " once the engine starts it runs fine "-----And what if the cranking ( flywheel speed ) was borderline ?----Some will argue.----In my opinion it cost nothing to inspect the starter.----There may be nothing wrong with it.----For zero $$ you can be sure of it.----Have battery load tested as well !!

    ?????---Nope ----See the lever on top of the control box with black on the end?-----That is for giving it throttle in neutral !!!----The guy on the dock was clueless as well !!

    I have a lot of experience with these V-4 motors.-----Everyone will suffer from broken piston rings at some point.----Do a compression test and post your numbers before spending any beer tokens on this motor !!----Not what you want to hear I guess.

    Those early 3 cylinder 650 models were not the best effort Mercury put on the market.----Compression test first.----Post your numbers.-----And you MUST install a new water pump impeller before you launch the boat.----Inspect the boat / transom too.---Aluminum boat or fiberglass ?

    ??----You say it runs " fantastic "----Then you say it stalls on you,------In my book that does not add up.----Nobody here can see , hear or touch your motor,---Sorry---Time for you to do some trouble shooting.---Sorry if you think I am blunt here.

    I see scoring of piston / rings.-----And that is on the cool " intake " side of the piston.-----It has been clearly stated that compression of 60 PSI is low.-----Likely not what you hoped / wanted to hear.----But it is what you need.-----Time to take this motor apart !!

    The plastic plug is for looks only.----Do a compression test now.----Replace impeller if motor has not suffered from gross neglect !!

    The serial # is below the lower cowling at the front.-----Compression is way too low.----Test with another gauge.-----Install a new water pump impeller now.

    Some will argue.----I would not hesitate to take that motor apart.----It needs work.-----Perhaps a doner motor with a good block and pistons.

    Do you have spark that jumps a gap of 3/8" or more on each lead , yes or no ?----Sparkplugs are not involved in that test.------Nobody can see , hear or feel your motor.----Up to you to answer questions / provide information.----That is how this might come to a positive result.

    Follow word for word.----Find the tan wire near top of cylinder head.----Slide the rubber boot to expose metal connecter.----Turn key to " on " at control box.----Touch metal on tan wire to a head bolt.----Horn should sound.

    Could also be a 1985 trim / tilt grafted onto a 77 exhaust housing.

    Nope----The hood appears to be a 1985 and not the same as a 77 hood.-----You need to check whether the 77 powerhead is properly installed on the 1985 midsection !!--------------Have you tested the overheat warning horn ?----Tell tale just is one way to indicate that water pump is...
