8hp starts but runs only at high rpms

So I guess this is a 4 stroke after all. You have a carburetor issue.

8hp starts but runs only at high rpms

I'm not familiar with all the models they offer.... is this a two stroke or a four stroke?

8hp starts but runs only at high rpms

Not sure if this is the same kind of carb as the 9.9 or 15, but if the float bowl below looks familiar then make sure that passage in the bottom is free from obstructions.

Tohatsu 6hp still not broke in having carb issues?

All I can say is that I had a 6HP motor with an 8 pitch prop on an 8'6" SIB and it would only get on plane with just me in the boat. I dropped down to that high-thrust prop with the 6" pitch and it no longer had a problem getting two of us with a dog and a full cooler up on plane. I moved it...

Tohatsu 6hp still not broke in having carb issues?

Unless you're really interested in top speed, I'd suggest getting a "high thrust" prop to replace your current one. It's a 6 pitch but more importantly it's got much larger blades so it can push a lot of water. It would help you get on plane much easier, especially if you're got a little more...

8hp starts but runs only at high rpms

You likely need to clean the carburetor GOOD. Like soak it overnight. There are passages that feed all the low speed circuits and different ones that feed the high speed circuits and it's likely you have some blockage in the low speed circuits. I had a very similar problem and tried the...

2006 Honda 9.9 Stalls in Gear in Idle

I have an older 8HP Honda, but I believe it is the same as the newer 9.9s. I had a problem where the motor wouldn't idle, but would run at higher RPMs. If I started the motor and quickly got up to speed, I could run for miles. If I slowed down it was tough to keep it running and would...

When did Honda first introduce the "Charging Systems" (Ports) for a battery on its outboards?

I have a BF8, made somewhere between 1990 and 1997 (I forget exact year, but I did look it up once). It is recoil start and does have a 12v charging coil on it.

    Need parts

The exciter coil would be the easiest thing to rewind. You'd have to know the size of the wire, which is easy to do as you can measure it with a micrometer or lay down 10 strips of it and measure it and divide by 10. Then unwind the original taking care to note the number and direction of...

    07 Tohatsu 3.5 4stroke...overheating?

If you started seeing temps >170, then you might have some buildup or debris in the passages as Paul mentions. Was this a salt water engine? What did it look like inside when you pulled the thermostat? I'm not sure on the 3.5 engine, but on the 4, 5 and 6hp motors the pee stream is before...

What's wrong with my new 6hp Tohatsu?

Did you go back and set the valves correctly? If you set them at TDC between exhaust and intake strokes then they are definitely way off and need to be fixed. The engine needs to be between the compression and power stroke at TDC. Watch the rocker arms as you approach that "T" mark on the...

    07 Tohatsu 3.5 4stroke...overheating?

"Too hot to touch" is about 120F, which would be very low for most outboards. Your thermostat was 135F, so I would expect something around that, but probably 140-145F. Would not be concerned unless you were measuring over 180, but seeing 160-170 would say that there's something that needs to...

What's wrong with my new 6hp Tohatsu?

You don't really need to look for the "T" on the flywheel, just look for the timing marks on the side. I believe there are two, one for 5BTDC and one for 25BTDC. Either one will do for these purposes, because you just need to know that both valves are closed.

What's wrong with my new 6hp Tohatsu?

I do believe the service manual calls for an inspection and adjust of the valves after the first 20 hours or one month, so you might just need to do that. As long as you have that cover off though, you may as well perform the complete compression test as you'll have direct access to the...

    Tohatsu Repair Products?

Looking for parts, then it's a legitimate concern but I have not had any problems getting old parts for Tohatsu motors. Sometimes it's even easier because you can find them branded under Mercury or Nissan (for the smaller motors). It wouldn't concern me at all about not seeing...

    Honda Idle Problem

I just went through a similar issue with a Honda 8HP. Does yours have a keihin carb? If so, it could be the same issue. I took mine off and cleaned it several times, even chasing every single passage I could with a wire or micro brush. ALL were clear but there is one little place that's...

    Need info on Tohatsu M9.8A

With all the impellers out there in the market, I'd be surprised if you couldn't find one that could be made to fit and work sufficiently.

Reinstalling a lower unit on a Tohatsu 5 HP?

That is the upper shift shaft. You don't really need to worry about that one, but the lower shift shaft (that's coming from the lower unit) need to go through the clamp that should still be on the upper shift shaft, then it need to go in the little hole closer to the top of that housing.

Reinstalling a lower unit on a Tohatsu 5 HP?

To me, the shift linkage was always the problem. Not down where the clamp is, but up at the top where it hits the "reverse lock" mechanism. I could get the lower unit almost all the way in and hit something solid and always thought it was the driveshaft not lining up, but it would end up...

Honda BF8A won't run at lower RPM

It's a "new to me" Honda BF8A Have had the motor for about a month and have put many hours on it. A few at full throttle but mostly something a bit less and also have idled around for hours and hours. I pulled the carb shortly after I got it and inspected and cleaned but it was pretty...
